Giving up alcohol

I just liked the buzz. But I simply don't get the same "buzz" anymore. I didn't stop per-say, I just didn't buy it anymore and when I thought about it, I realized I haven't drank for a couple of years.

Same, and didn't try to stop, as not really an issue, just lost the desire. Use to take me 6 months to finish a slab of beer. So long that I stopped buying, as prefer fresh, and no older that couple months from brew date.

When they stopped making Kopper Kraft, during early scamdemic, I pretty much stopped completely. Rarely opened a 2nd can (490ml) as it was, and never seemed to finish a 2nd can. Really can't remember last time a drank an alcoholic beverage.

That would surprise quite a few from years past, as quite enjoy a buzz back then in USA. I had a 2 tap bar in my foyer at my first house (USA). Even then it used to take a while to finish 'my' keg.

Tried Carabao & TawanDaeng brand a couple years ago, and didn't finish one of them.

Every alcoholic I ever met with a drinking problem always insisted it is normal to drink.

So you stopped wrecking your bank account and your health and now life feels boring. Tragic. Clearly the problem is too much self control. You should jump right back into drinking and gambling and rea

Yeah Thai beer is crap. Western nations are better for drinking. Lots more choices.

So you trust alcoholics?

If I had access to good Microbrews I might still have one now and then. But this tiger pee that is passed off as beer. No great loss.

Nothing wrong with Singha. It's inexpensive and tasty. Just excuses. You could find that special beer if you wanted.

I'm not shocked to see so many farang drinking Leo, Chang. No accounting for bad taste.

Yup. More than non drinkers. They may or may not be <deleted> but you don't need to watch your back like non drinkers

I don't trust short men or bald men.

First you need to figure out why you drink alcohol. For myself, it complimented my sex addiction.

I certain sipped a lot more when single, than in a relationship. I actually enjoy a decent Ale, Mojito, or Long Isle Iced Tea. Was never a true Alky, need vs entertainment. It can be socially addicting, especially if one's life revolves around drinking establishment, which I always found to be quite boring.

Add that to the crap beer in TH, or silly price of a decent imported one or 'craft' beer, and it's easy not to drink at all. Alcohol isn't my first choice for a beverage, and if it is for you, then yea, you have a problem, especially if drinking more than one, without food.

If every time you crack open a beer, or favorite tipple and find yourself on #3, then you probably have a problem, especially if it's more than once or twice a week.

I have a friend who I called alcoholic, but himself claimed he was not, even he admitted he did drink like an alcoholic.

Anyway, he just stopped one day, and started hitting the gym. Now two years after lost 30kg, and more happy than ever, and not the same idiot anymore. He was an completely as hole to be around when drinking, so I usually left him after 2-3 drinks when he visited Thailand. we are talking about lunch time.

Same as for cigarettes. The drunks start in the first place to get addicted out of boredom, depression and cheap booze. But unless you get a qualified doctor who will expose your addiction as a mirror, the drunk will rarely admit and thus be able to stop. Some psychologists claim that those addicted had some biological dispositions in their mind and body that facilitated their addiction. Some tests were done if I am not mistaken. On a pannel of addicted they did find similarities in the brain, that were not present amongst the subjects tested who were not addicted drunks. But such studies rarely make their way. Tobbaco lobbys have corrupted a good amount of academics, politicans and media. In today's world you can only count on one person. That's yourself.

I have a good friend who was drinking everyday, sometimes in excess, and she got in a car wreck and wrapped her car around a telephone pole while driving home drunk. She's been sober ever since, it's been 2 months now and she did it without therapy, without rehab, and without the use of AA. That takes real heart and soul.

Or a good wake up call which she certainly had!

I had to stop drinking alcohol about 18 months ago due to health problems. I thought it would be difficult, but it hasn’t been a problem at all, even though I sometimes miss having a glass of wine or a couple of beers.

Before that, I drank regularly — not heavily, but a couple of beers, drinks, or glasses of wine almost every day.

Same here.

Doctors in Hong Kong finally diagnosed my unexplained weight loss and mobility/stability problems (fell over for no apparent reason and fractured my shoulder) to LIVER fibrosis, following CT scans and a 'Fibroscan'.

Immediately 'ordered' off ALL and any alcohol at any time....if I hoped to see them again in 6 months!

Only ever drank beer and red wine, increasingly so in latter years due to various emotional stresses (and being in the stressful end of the aviation industry for over 40 years, am not inclined to succumb to ad hoc or occupational stress).

Stresses of the first marriage (31yrs) and various outside of work, business ventures etc.

Warning: always consoled myself that just beer and wine were OK...No 'liver killer' spirits.

But the fact is, it's still alcohol. And consumed continuously over many years, it's still a liver killer!

Giving up alcohol was nearly as easy as quitting smoking. Although, as others have pointed out, it can take some 'spark' out of life (parties, celebrations, reunions etc) and lack of a mental/emotional cushion in times of pain, frustration and upsets.

My Thai wife still enjoys an occasional glass of red, and I take a small mouthful, swish it around the mouth for a few minutes, then spit it out....just like a wine tasting.

Get all the enjoyment of the flavours without the boot.

Have tried zero alcohol beers when I'm in HK, but they mostly taste like crap.

Only exception is authentic Irish Guinness Zero.

Identical flavour appearance and texture. But imported and NOT cheap!

So, there it is.

For better or worse.

Not everyone who likes a tipple now & then are alcoholics.

This thread's about giving up the booze. Another from Harrisfan is about giving up smoking.

Nothing about giving up the nookie!

Could he do one on quitting posting here please?

What's an alcoholic? This is not a black and white definition. My uncle had a friend who was a brain surgeon. He had to drink every day. He'd have one shot of vodka in the morning and one shot of vodka before bed. Couldn't function otherwise. This comes within the definition of a functioning alcoholic. Would you trust this brain surgeon?

50+ standard drinks a week.

Two shots a day. One in the morning and one at night. That's two standard drinks a day. That's 14 standard drinks (not 50+) in a weak. This falls within the recommended range for spirit consumption.

Yeah 14 is not much. Over 50 is an alcoholic.

I wish his parents had given up nookie prior to his conception. AN would certainly be a much better place and most probably, the world.

It cannot really start a thread about giving something up if it is not actually doing/getting it!

Have you done it or tried it? I stopped for 1 to 2 months a few times. Got a bit bored. Going whole fitness thing really isnt that exciting. Seems normal to drink.

I gave up 10 years ago after coughing up blood on a bender one night, had 1-2 glasses of wine since then. Now only the weed for me!

Why do you read all my topics? You really are not much of a man. Calling people "its" online. You sound really pathetic. 15 of your last 15 posts were directed at me. Are you ok? You sound totally obsessed and avoid the topics I start. Why would an old farang in Thailand be so obsessed with a farang online they never met? It is hard to explain. You could just discuss the topic.

And the Blue Zone people, who drink wine, and live longer on average than anyone else, prove doctors wrong all the time.

Yes, Petite Sirah is the Durif. Most of what I've had were from California, where most of it is indeed Durif.

I did try some Australian Durif on a few occasions when I was visiting relatives there, but I have to say that I wasn't impressed because they were around 15% ABV and very tannic, and it would seem that the producers were in a race to produce the Durif with the highest alcohol content!!!

Not to my liking and totally different from the Durif/Petite Sirah wine produced in California which I can still find and buy here in Thailand and although it is the 2018 vintage, it is still holding up very well.

The longer I'm here, the more I miss there, including the wine bargains. I always liked Beaujolais, although inexpensive and not long lasting. Have had almost no wine here, but did when I visited my daughter in November in Texas.
