Why Global Opinion Is Turning Against Israel – And What Comes Next

Gaza rebuild.jpg

Global opinion is turning sharply against Israel as the war in Gaza drags on and long-standing grievances over occupation, settlement expansion and civilian harm intensify. While Israel maintains that its military campaign is aimed at eliminating Hamas and defending its security, many governments, institutions and publics now see a broader pattern of unchecked force and territorial entrenchment that is eroding Israel’s moral and diplomatic standing.

At the centre of the backlash is the continued bombing of Gaza, where civilian casualties, mass displacement and the destruction of basic infrastructure have produced scenes that dominate international media.

Despite Israel’s insistence that it targets militants and infrastructure embedded among civilians, images of flattened neighbourhoods, overcrowded hospitals and humanitarian shortages have fuelled accusations of disproportionate force and collective punishment.

These concerns have increasingly been echoed by traditional allies, not just Israel’s critics.

Beyond Gaza, anger is growing over developments in the West Bank. Israeli settlement expansion has continued despite repeated international warnings, with new outposts established and existing settlements expanded on land claimed by Palestinians. At the same time, reports of Israeli settlers attacking Palestinian farmers, burning crops, damaging olive groves and intimidating rural communities have multiplied.

Human rights groups argue that such violence often occurs with little accountability and, in some cases, under the protection of Israeli security forces — reinforcing perceptions of a two-tier legal system.

Diplomatically, this combination of military pressure in Gaza and creeping annexation in the West Bank has undermined Israel’s long-held argument that the conflict is purely a security issue.

Increasingly, it is being framed internationally as a question of occupation, land seizure and denial of Palestinian self-determination. This shift is visible in growing support for legal action at international courts, parliamentary votes recognising Palestinian statehood, and public protests across Europe, the US and the Global South.

If the situation remains unresolved, the likely outcome is deeper isolation for Israel rather than improved security. Continued conflict risks sanctions, arms restrictions and the fraying of key alliances, particularly among younger Western voters who are far more critical of Israeli policy than previous generations. On the ground, endless military management of the conflict may entrench radicalisation on both sides, making a negotiated settlement even more distant.

Without a credible political path — one that halts settlement growth, restrains settler violence and addresses Palestinian statehood — Israel faces a future defined not by military victory, but by diplomatic erosion and permanent instability.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Civilian harm is driving the backlash
Continued bombing in Gaza, high civilian casualties and the destruction of homes, hospitals and infrastructure have shifted international sympathy away from Israel — even among long-standing allies.

  • Settlement expansion and settler violence fuel anger
Ongoing land seizures in the West Bank and repeated attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian farmers have reinforced accusations of occupation, lawlessness and a two-tier justice system.

  • Israel’s security argument is losing traction
What Israel frames as self-defence is increasingly viewed abroad as permanent military control and denial of Palestinian self-determination, weakening its diplomatic position.

  • Legal and diplomatic pressure is building
Support is growing for international court action, sanctions debates, arms restrictions and recognition of Palestinian statehood across Europe and the Global South.

  • The longer it drags on, the worse the outcome
Without a political solution, Israel risks deeper isolation, generational loss of Western support and a conflict that becomes more radicalised and harder to resolve.

I think it’s entirely possible to acknowledge that, while Israel has every right to defend its security and while Hamas is the worst sort of terrorist organization, Israel’s response to Hamas’s 2023 attack has mostly victimized (and killed) innocent Palestinian civilians, and its ongoing appropriation of land in the West Bank is illegal and wrong. Both Israelis and Palestinian Arabs deserve progressive leadership that honestly seeks peace and accommodation.

AFAIAC idiocy is blaming a country for defending itself.

  • Popular Post

It’s because of advancement in communication tools and emergence of alternative media. Israel from before its inception til now had an agenda that was contrary to the spirit of decency. It’s only recently that ordinary people are becoming more aware of it and responding as decent humans would.

Yes, totally idiotic, infers that Tsahal should have lined up all Hamas terrorists given them, one by one, a slap on their wrist, and maybe, requested a promise that they wouldn't do it again.

Anyhow, tremendous achievement on the part of IDF, if only I was younger...

Either all "Land Grabs" are illegal or none are. If the former, say goodbye to your own country.

And here I thought Don had stopped the Gaza war already, one of 8 wars. Or was it 9 now?

Even Vance had to travel to Armenia yesterday, to give it another shot at another one of Don's already "fixed" wars.

How anyone can defend Israel's genocide against the Palestinians, is beyond me.

Arming pagers to explode was an act of terrorism. Leveling cities is an act of terrorism. Hence, the world, as a whole, detests terrorist acts, and as such, Israel is condemned for its acts of terror on civilian populations.

Like in Minnesota we can all see exactly what is happening. Your white noise can't hide it no matter how far you and others up the volume.

Nothing but praise for what Israel/the IDF are doing.

Basically, the Jewish population of Israel needs a head change and reeducation. When I look at the behaviour of the West Bank settlers, they are not proper Jews and do not respect others or the Commandments. They should be banned (and some sent to the Hague for the rest of their lives).

A long time ago it became obvious that successive Israeli governments had no intention to honor the spirit of Oslo, which was not a viable agreement if Israel was not going to act in good faith. The viable alternative is to formally recognize Israel as an apartheid state and invoke universal sanctions. "Negotiations" at this point are futile.
