Very rarely does a member get banned immediately, without prior warnings. An example of an immediate ban would be a newbie spammer, and moderators are grateful to members for reporting them immediately, so that they can get zapped before they flood the forum with their spam.

Otherwise, a member really has to want to get banned, ie continue to violate forum rules knowingly and willingly despite many previous warnings for violations of the rules.

The forum rules have grown in length over time and may be tedious reading, but if we want to be honest with ourselves they really say nothing else but “be well-mannered and civil, use your common sense...and do not discuss the monarchy or any member of Thai royal families, past or present”

By excluding members who do not wish to conform to this norm ThaiVisa has deliberately chosen to be a select group of people that excludes those other people, and ThaiVisa is the better for it.

Ah, so if those are the key points then (i.e. common sense and civility basically covering all forms of flaming and other anti-social behaviour), that must mean you think that the whole "discussing moderation" thing is secondary, and something you'd really rather not have to enforce, given the choice?

I actually never bothered to read any of the forum rules and never got a warning either.

I do miss some of the banned members, but then again, I can also do without them. If I wish to converse with them I could log into several other boards where I am signed up as well, but I never really bother doing so.

Actually, it was the fact that many of them are useful contributors to other boards - 'the' other board in particular - that set me thinking about the issue of lifetime bans in the first place. No point in repeating myself (so I won't ), but it would have been nice to reunite some of the Bedlam family. Although I can think of a handful that would be likely to return if afforded the opportunity, there are probably many more. However, the horse is now well and truly deceased...

I can't remember a thread in Bedlam ever staying ON the rails

yes, interesting thread (is that sound of bristling I hear?) those of us that have been around here for a bit remember when there weren't no rules or behavior control mechanism and someone could get 'sent off' (banned, given a holiday, whatever) by mere personal distaste. I was treated unfairly once but I have forgiven the perpetrator and the world seems to be a better place.

TV is a great resource...not just a form of entertainment for us drunken voluable types. The return of various banned members would destabilise the status quo and that would jeapordise the resource. For better or worse the folks here have at times made my lonely existence bearable...nice to know that they are around.
