Thanks everyone. It's a lovely day today. The wife and girls are in Bangkok, the dog hasn't thrown up, there's a bird singing outside my window and the maid just made my favorite dish. Think I'll take Empress (my pig) for a walk in the forest to commune with the nats and give thanks for all my blessings... and my tribulations too.

TP: Whenever I'm feeling down I'll always remember at least I'm not as old as that Thaipauly fellow.

Herr Doktor: As i only have an occasional drink, and only in the company of my German BIL, I think your wife should let you have the drink I might have otherwise had today. It's bad logic, but you may catch her in a weak moment.

Thaddeus: don't you just love dogs? They'll break your heart in the end, but give your life more flavor and fun than it could have ever have had if not for knowing them.

Rebirth as cycle of consciousness

Another view of rebirth describes the cycle of death and rebirth in the context of consciousness rather than the birth and death of the body. In this view, remaining impure aggregates, skandhas, reform consciousness into a new form.

Buddhist meditation teachers suggest that through careful observation of the mind, it is possible to see consciousness as being a sequence of conscious moments rather than a continuum of awareness. Each moment is an experience of an individual mind-state: a thought, a memory, a feeling, a perception. A mind-state arises, exists and, being impermanent, ceases following which the next mind-state arises. Thus the consciousness of a sentient being can be seen as a continuous series of birth and death of these mind-states. In this context rebirth is simply the persistence of this process. Clearly this explanation of rebirth is wholly divorced from rebirth which may follow bodily death.

The explanation of rebirth as a cycle of consciousness is consistent with other core Buddhist beliefs, such as anicca (impermanence), dukkha (unsatisfactoriness) and anatta (non-self). Furthermore, it is possible to observe a karmic link between these mind-states

Sonny Boy, aka "Cumbrian Roughrider" died this late afternoon. I'm a little biased, but he's probably the best dog that ever lived. If you met him I'm sure you'd agree. Not that evry other dog isn't great but they don't have his cerrtain specialness.

Here he is at his most portly self. We were living with a Lanna Princess who just adored Sonny Boy, so she tolerated me. She used to save all the best bits for Sonny Boy, which being as he was all about love, he could not deprive her of the joy of giving :

Oh, here's a funny story. The Chao used to admonish me constantly for having Sonny Boy neutered whn he was 5 years old.

chao: Khun Ken, I'd like to give Sonny Boy's puppies to the Queen.

I'm sorry Chao, but that's not possible.

chao: I know that's not possible because you cut his balls off. Why did you cut his balls off Khun Ken? I can't give a puppy to the Queen if you've cut his balls off. what were you thinking?

Pretty funny when an old lady of regal bearing talks like that, or maybe you just had to be there.

Tomorrow morning he gets layed to rest. here's the view from his burial spot. Oh, that's him in the picture!

Anyhow, that';s dry season. lots of water now. He love's the water ,hills, trees, etc. hates a bath though. I hope they put my ashes right next to hism.

A beautiful place Lan, Trees to shade him and a cool stream for those hot summer days as he dreams on Canis Major, and lopes around with Orion's other hounds.
