PAD driving away police at Suvarnabhumi

(BangkokPost.com) – Police who set up security checkpoints at Suvarnabhumi airport were overran by a handful of protesters led by the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) on Saturday morning.

The PAD mobilised more yellow-clad protesters to drive the police out of the airport. The protesters destroyed police vehicles, including inmate trucks, and blockaded the motorway to Suvarnabhumi.

After the Emergency Decree was enforced in Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, police were deployed to the motorway and set up security checkpoints to stop more demonstrators from entering Suvarnabhumi. However, the operation fell short as the police could not resist the anti-government raid.

Besides, the protesters were able to take back their knives and rods seized by the authorities earlier.

Does anyone have a link to live bbc world news? I've only got CNN and it seems they can't remove themselves from Mumbai. The tragedy that that is, there are a lot of other stories in the world.

I'd be surprised if the BBC was any better. During the Tsunami, my hotel in Patong only got the BBC, and it was non-stop reporting on India. Barely any mention of Thailand, Indonesia, Sumatra, etc.

Al Jazeera have a reporter at the airport but still mainly on Mumbai. The reporter estimates PAD numbers have doubled since the start with more coming in to enjoy the weekend. And it doesn't seem like the police are about to move in any time soon.

Yes, a simple visit to the PAD at Government House before this week would put paid to the myths and misinformation that seems to be rampant on thaivisa.com. "Paid rent-a-protestors!" Sounds slick when you say it quickly, but it has no validity, just noise.

To add: most people made pictures of themself or movies and most of their cameras were not the cheap 3000 Baht model. You could see clearly that these are not the poor one.

The problem with the BBC is it tends to be several hours out of date and then inaccurate at best!

Yes agree, you get much 'newer' news on Al Jazerra BBC has the same news 4 or 5 hours later, it happens time and time again.

Interesting. The PAD I saw in the BBC report were clad in black, balaclava's the lot...... very menacing.

In the interest of anti-corruption and what is right, I take it the leaders of the PAD will be stepping forward once this is over..... whatever the outcome...... to face the music and do their "time" for what amounts to an act of terrorism.

Anything else would surely be in contradiction of their own protest. We would not want anyone to avoid prosecution of their crimes through influence and manipulation would we?

That is of course if hijacking an International airport is actually a crime?

Chamlong says crisis will end before Dec 5

Chamlong Srimaung, a co-leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy, said Saturday that the political crisis would end before Friday.

He said he was willing to hold talk with Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat anywhere except Chiang Mai because it is too far away.

It's not a case of Keystone Cops, but of police who have no faith in their commanders and are unwilling to put themselves on the line for them.

If the police can't evict the PAD then that really is it for the inept government. As a seize power at any cost move by the PAD it has been quite a clever strategy as they have the army on side. In reality this is a another coup, but by insurgency rather than via the usual army. No doubt the country and economy will take years to recover from this but as in any situation where there is a power play for control of a country the power brokers from opposing sides really don't care. If more violence ensues later in response to this then Thailand may have done itself immeasurable damage.

PAD supporters here should consider that a victory in a battle isn't always what it seems, you can sometimes win the war but lose the peace.

Sadly the usual military coup would probably have caused less damage. What remains to be seen is whether after the dust settles the PAD will have managed to split the country further. There is already an insurrection in the south, are they now going to disenfranchise (as they have threatened) and alienate the north and northeast? Thailand is more than just Bangkok.

PAD guards detain policeman

Guards of the People's Alliance for Democracy detained a police senior sergeant major Saturday morning.

Pol Senior Sgt Maj Sompop Nathee, an officer from the Border Patrol Police Region 1 was arrested when he rode a motorcycle to a scene where police crashed with protesters at a police checkpoint on Kingkaew Road.

Sompop was taken to be questioned by Samran Rodphet, a leader of the PAD.

Samran ordered the guards to continue to detain the police officer after the questioning.

Sompop told Samran tht he happed to drive his car past the Kingkaew checkpoint when the clash occurred and he was forced to retreat along with other policemen.

He later decided to ride a taxi motorcycle to the spot to retrieve his car but found that it had been damaged by the protesters. He was captured by the PAD guards at the spot.

When PAD guards took him to Samran inside the Suvarnabhumi Airport, reporters and photographers tried to follow him to interview and take photos but the guards and other protesters booed at the newsmen and did not allow them to follow the guards.

Airport Activists Capture Copper

Anti-government protesters in Thailand have taken a police officer captive as tensions at an airport standoff escalate.

The trouble occured when 1,000 activists moved in on a police checkpoint close to the Suvarnabhumi international airport in Bangkok, seized on Tuesday.

The advance triggered a confrontation that subsided without violence when the police hastily withdrew.

However, one remaining officer was grabbed by protesters, put in a vehicle, and driven away, international reporters said.

The kidnapping intensifies fears that the four-day airport siege will end in violence, despite the Thai prime minister earlier pledging to use peaceful methods to resolve the issue.

Thousands of travellers remain stranded in the country's capital with all civilian air traffic blocked.

Both protesters and police reinforced their presence at Suvarnabhumi international airport, prior to the officer's capture.

Earlier, more protesters arrived at the airport in cars and buses despite road blocks set up by police, boosting their number to several thousand.

"Today, we see blood with our eyes. We will fight," said Sondhi Limthongkul, protest leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy. "At this moment, there is no way we will negotiate."

Protesters are demanding the resignation of the government it accuses of being a puppet of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Shinawatra, who recently relinquished control of Manchester City football club, was ousted by a 2006 military coup and fled overseas to escape corruption charges.

Current prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, Shinawatra's brother-in-law, declared a state of emergency at Suvarnabhumi and at the smaller Don Muang domestic airport, also occupied by demonstrators.

But in a televised address on Friday night he said: "Do not be concerned. The security forces will use peaceful means.

"There will be negotiations and whatever else which is appropriate in the situation."

Mr Wongsawat also demoted the national police chief amid speculation he disagreed with government policy.

The failure to end the illegal airport closures has led to calls in the media for Mr Wongsawat to step down, even from those who oppose the protesters.

That is how Jonathan Head described the protesters. He did mention as well that his information was from his government sources. His admission about his sources doesn't give a lot of credibility to his reporting, IMHO.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this article? The PAD arrested a Police Senior Sergeant, shouldn't it be the other way around where the police arrest the PAD? And when they took him back to be "questioned", reporters and and camera men where not allowed to follow. It just shows that the PAD has no respect for the law and think that can whatever they please.

But I'm curious to know if when push comes to shove where will Sondhi Limtongkul, Chamlong Srimuang and the other leaders of the PAD will be if there will bloodshed. I'm sure they will be safely hiding behind there puppets.
