Thai Gps App For Android: Which Better?

Featured Replies

I'm currently in the UK using "navigate 6" seems better than Sygic. Can download maps or use online.

My experimentation with Sygic has shown that I can download maps for off-line, voice-guided navigation and that I can also use it when I am online if I so choose.

Since praising Google maps app for my Android, I have a bit less respect for this app. Weird: the word 'ramp': no idea what this means, sometimes it means go on to the toll way, sometimes it doesn't. 'Slight right' recently meant do a U-turn. 'Sharp left' and 'turn right' didn't mean anything at all as the map showed a straight course for many miles and there was no junction (thankfully). I have stopped trusting the voice instructions but in Bangkok I don't want to be looking at my phone in many situations. I will be buying a Garmin with carcam, hopefully with English maps and voice. Too much hassle with my phone that overheats due to using GPS satellites and Internet while being charged. I have to stop the car (an easy task in Bangkok), take out the batteries and put back to make it work again. Always seems to happen in the worst place. It is ok out in the sticks though, despite being sent down a muddy track one time, we had a hired truck with 4x4 fortunately, as there was no way I was going to be able to stop or turn around.

so true.. i was just showing an option to sygic that so far in the uk was better for my use.. easy to download different voices etc... also seemed to be a cleaner screen interface. Will be back in Thailand in a few days.. time will tell if it's good or not!

Bina, I suggest that on your next visit to Thailand you install both Navigate 6 and Sygic and see whose graphic user interface, menu system and voice guidance you like better. They both use the same map material, the TomTom maps. Both offer a free trial period, Navigate 6 one month, can't remember how long it was with Sygic.

Here is a free navigation software for Android phones:

http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Navit_on_Android

You can donwload every map you´ll need here:

http://maps3.navit-project.org/

I just installed it, so I dont know how it works. But the screens looking good: http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Main_Page

I'm going to test it with the map for Italy, if there is one.

I have not tried any Gps apps for my android phone, but i heard possitive review about Navfree which is completely free and it has pretty good features.

Had a look at this but it doesn't appear to have any maps for Thailand to download.

I haven't used it but wasn't Google Maps for android supposed to fill this requirement? I heard it was didn't consume ISP time and offered navigation turn by turn?

Yes, if U don't mind paying for every map being downloaded. Mobile internet isn't unlimited here.

it isn't?

I wonder what i used the last 4 years? AIS unlimited 500 bath a month (now 600 i think)

Unlimited data but the download speed is throttled back (slowed down) once you reach 2Gb per month

We used local/googleaps to locate ourselves in backcountry and called friends for actual directions (turn left at the wat and go past 3 houses and a right after pink house)....used google Earth to see our village path s...

We used NavFree through Europe and it was great. Friends also used it in Canada and was perfect.

It now supports maps for some Asian countries including Thailand but unfortunately all street names are in Thai with little or no Roman translation.

Hopefully this may change with enough feedback.

Have also tried Nostra.

I read about ArcGIS in another topic, installed it on my Android phone to test it, and it may be exactly what you want: an offline map, ie no internet connection needed, that shows you where your are and in what direction you are going, nothing more and nothing less:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.esri.android.client&hl=en

It is free and works internationally. Install it on your phone, test it wherever you are at the moment on this planet, and see if it suits your needs.

Google o my Nexus 7 Andriod Tablet is fine for Thailand.

I also have a paid version of OSM - which has a lot of functionality and works better in Laos. (Google has no voice in Laos).

the main problem with OSM is the absurdly irrational search system which gets infuriating at times.

I use both of these in conjunction with Evernote to store routes and pinpoints.
