Trolls And How To Deal With Them

Featured Replies

How do you deal with this select band?

The reason I ask today is because of two specific instances in recent threads:

One in regard to a bottle and glue in General, which has been largely neutralised because many posters expressed their disapproval to his actions, no one went over board, just showed contempt for him.

Another in the Sports section, when shown a differing aspect to his view, immediately retaliated with a perjorative term, when confronted for evidence has for the mean time disapeared.

So how do you think the Troll should be treated?

If you take too strong a line you're likely to be admonished even if the trollishness is obvious.

some trolls are funny, some are nasty. send the nasty ones to me :)

Its clear to me that Pseudolus was pulling the chain with that....he meant it to be funny I reckon.

What is interesting about this poster is that he has had enough of Thailand and that is now showing in his posting style.

Previously he was quite sensible...kook at his posts on the pets forum for example.

I reckon some of them are quite clever in their low level negativity..........they just chip away, away, away......just enough to irritate but not enough to appear on the radar.

There are two just now in General who set out to disrupt every other topic in that way, and in my opinion one particular " high profile " member is needing a slap for siding with / encouraging them. This member rarely comments on the general forum unless there is a subject of " special " interest to him, ( he has decided that he is all knowing in certain matters, and everyone else is a cretin, even those with equal knowledge ) , however he cannot resist showing his true nature when threads such as Transams " who would you miss thread " come along.

I don't need to name him............I've no doubt the guilty party will be along shortly and he will out himself. coffee1.gif

WWJD?

Thanks for asking but I'm too busy now shilling for Obama ...coffee1.gif

Sometimes I think it best to enlighten the bait, rather than the Shark

What would General be without it's trolls anyway?

A Leinster free flowing passing movement with O'Driscoll at the head of the V, instead of a Munster planned bash at the opposition, rolling over any defence, without any thought to the spectators.

Most of the funny ones are OK to interact with, the nasty ones, like some giant Talos have an Achilles heel, but gather many cronies to their cause.

Everyones too quick to jump to the troll button.

Sometimes it's justified, personally I seldom bother unless I suspect an ulterior motive.

There's a forum far far away where it's considered a rite of passage into manhood to come over here and make a pest of yourself.

You can usually pick it when they start flaming on their second or third post. thumbsup.gif

The motorcycle forum has been infiltrated by sponsoring trolls in disguise. neus.gif

What between UG and a bike eek?

One blows hot gases and gets you from A to B

And one blows hot gases and gets you nowhere

You and me both....tis my life long cross to bare.

Well, here is how I deal with it,

Petty bickering posts deleted. If you can't play in the sandbox like big boys then you won't get to play in the sandbox at all. Harassing another member is the worst kind of troll and one I come down on very hard. So unless you want to spend a few weeks on holiday I would HIGHLY recommend you recall what it is like to be an adult.

Does that qualify for "how to handle trolls" ?

I am not entirely sure, but I think a friendly MOD helped me out, deleted a few things and then put me on MOD preview, that saved any more blushes wai2.gif

Did that feel intrusive or pleasurable?

My experience has been less than.

I blame a fine single malt

That is a tragic waste of a wonderful drink you know.

You need much more moderation Mossy....a smaller glass.....a fuller belly.....less golf on the TV....an Indian summer.

OK I admit the last one is my own selfish addition.

I have one member who PM's me ahead of a binge asking to be put on mod preview - that way he doesn't get in trouble :)
