Police reinforcements to bolster Phuket tourist safety

Phuket Gazette -

PHUKET: A 30-day boost in tourist-safety measures on Phuket sees an additional 400 Royal Thai Police, sourced from every division of the force, stepping foot on the island today.

The desperately needed extra “troops” on the ground comes days after Ambassadors to Thailand from Canada, the Netherlands and UK visited Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut to voice their concerns about tourist safety.

“Due to the vast number of tourists visiting the island, the Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police is making public safety on Phuket a priority during the high season,” Phuket Provincial Police Commander Choti Chavalviwat told the Phuket Gazette.

The 400-strong team will be working with Phuket Police and focusing on increasing public safety, especially in crowded tourist areas, Maj Gen Choti said.

In addition to beefing up police presence on the island, an 89 million-baht CCTV installation project presented by Phuket Provincial Administration Office (PPAO) is being considered by the Cabinet in a meeting on Koh Samui.

The project aims to increase the government’s 242 CCTV cameras across the island by 2,400 cameras. If approved, it will be a scaled-down version of the 10,000 CCTV camera project originally proposed by PPAO President Paiboon Upatising in response to the Michelle Smith slaying in June.

“Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut considers the project most urgent,” Maj Gen Choti said.

“The sooner we install the cameras, the faster we can catch suspects,” he added.

Visiting police hoping for some share of that famed tea money.

More CCTV budget, more tea money. Why not just get cameras installed to work 24/7 and not just on a selective basis.

It must be selective to create blind spots for the thieves, muggers and scammers to work.

Oh, I think, the CCTV's working 24/7

Only the view on the material is very selective!

TukTuk gang member/s involved as suspects = 'No work'

Tuk Tuk gang member/s as 'victims' - working very well!

[p.ex. only]

What happened to allowing anyone to monitor the newley installed cctv cameras?

http://www.thaivisa....stalled +anyone

Well remembered, Shot:

Once the system is in operation, anyone will be able to log in and view live CCTV footage through their computers, iPads, tablets and even mobile phones.

I've a pretty good idea what happened - it doesn't bloody work, that's what happened.

They just don't seem to get it.

The ambassadors are asking for long-term solutions to serious ingrained problems which are becoming progressively worse.

Will the 400 extra police be assisting in the removal of scammers and shysters once and for all or will there just be more roadblocks and more coppers to investigate incidents after they've happened?

Knee jerking at it's finest. It'll all be forgotten as soon as they think the ambassadors have forgotten about it.

But for this month, we can expect to see more checkpoints.

Because I don't think, the additional 100 officers (p.ex.) in Chalong 'can' reduce the extra income of the regular 100 at about 50%.

I'm only not sure, if they have the coolness, to ask (bar/t-shirt/....) business owner's for 4k, this month. Instead of the usual 2k/month.

Maybe they show up with 4 BiB's, and 2 collectors with the paylist, this time. To make sure, people see and understand the reasons.

Oh: Maybe there is a increase in applications for a transfer to Phuket, afterwards!

Wouldn't it be better to send these 400 extras to the South to stop the insane killings there and let Phuket / Pattaya sort out their own mess ?? Pffffffff!! What a waste !

The south is dangerous! They pay police in the south double the money, they pay police elsewhere.

Ok, still police in Phuket earns a lot more, but the point is: They will not find 400 officers, to go to the south, without have to 'spin the wheel'.

I noticed a new checkpoint on the Kata-Rawai road. Presumably because of all the "knockoff motorbike robberies" happening again along there.

So , essentially then , the message they're sending out to the world is that Phuket is really a rather dangerous place for tourists? (but only for the next 30 days !)

The message, they sending out:

"Hey, folks, keep your heads down. We have 400 more people on Phuket.

And it's not sure, they understand the Phuket way.

So go for holiday or something, and let it/them go!"

Why do I have the feeling, a announcement of massive more presence is not meant, to trouble locals?

Try reading the other news source. It is usually a lot more accurate than the Gazette!

how will more poilce stop tuk tuk drivers from cheating passengers?

how will it help those that rent Jet skis?

How will it help those that get taken to the wrong hotel cause the taxi driver tells them the one they want to go to is closed?

police are worthless except for writing tickets for farangs driving wihtout license or helmuts at check points

The going rate for a policeman to transfer to Pattaya is 50,000 baht according to the local gossip.

Reminds me of the old joke :-

" Send reinforcements we are going to advance" was whispered down the trenches.

When it got to H.Q it was delivered as "Send 3/4d we are going to a dance"

* (It only works if you are old an English - 3/4d read as three & fourpence or more fully 3 shillings & fourpence)
