PATTAYA: -- A 23 year old Security Guard working for a Walking Street Nightclub was shot in the chest and was lucky to escape death, according to medics. He was shot by a man who was part of group that were refused entry after one of them could not present his Thai ID card to confirm his age.

Police were called to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital just before 4am on Thursday and met with Khun Lungsurian aged 27 who is a work colleague of the victim, Khun Amontaerp aged 23. The pair work at The Pier Nightclub on Walking Street and earlier in the night were confronted by a group of 5-6 young Thai men who wanted to enter the club. They impose a strict entry policy of not allowing anyone inside the club unless they are at least 20 years of age.

The victim was checking the Thai ID cards of the group when one of them said he was not carrying his ID card. Therefore the guard refused entry to the entire group which angered them to the point where one of the group produced a gun and shot Khun Amontaerp in his left chest and arm.

There are some real nut cases running around with guns. Shooting someone simply because you couldn't get into a club??

Ah well, here in Cambodia people get shot because they look at someone the "wrong" way. I love this part of the world but the sudden, lethal, violence over nothing at all is scary. Mind you, it happens in the West, too.

I had an incident on the road a while back when a thai man threatened to shoot me because i had beeped my bike horn at him (he was driving crazy). What sort of person does that over a horn beep?

So did they get into the club? I agree that Thais hate confrontation: maybe shooting isn't considered as confrontation? My take is that they lack gradations of handling some issue that doesn't sit well with them, they lack the skills to bring up topics of disagreement, and this lack leads to an "all or none" response, hence shooting.
