CHIANG MAI: -- A physical training instructor of a wellknown school in Chiang Mai was shot dead this morning inside a gold shop as he allegedly tried to rob the shop. The shopowner was also seriously injured by the alleged robber.

The dead man was identified as Mr Sakorn Kunjana 33. He was found lying dead in the kitchen of Yaowaraj Ruam Choke gold shop in Muang district with three gunshot wounds inflicted by a .38 calibre pistol. Lying next to him was Mr Chavalit Chin-anukulpong, the shopowner, who sustained serious injuries on his face and head from hammer strikes.

Mr Chavalit reportedly told police that he went into the gold shop at about 7.30 a.m. to make preparations for the opening of the shop. Shortly afterward, a car stopped in front of his shop and a man, later identified as Sakorn, disembarked and knocked at the door several times.

The gold shopowner said he thought it was his employee knocking at the door and removed the lock only to find Sakorn forcibly push in. Both engaged in a struggle and in the middle of the fisticuff, Sakorn took out a hammer from his pocket and hit Chavalit on the face and head.

However, Chavalit managed to free himself, grab a pistol from a drawer and fire three times at the intruder.

Police said he suspected the intruder might be an addicted gambler and decided to rob the gold shop so that he would have money to settle his old debts so that he would be able to bet again at the forthcoming World Cup tournament.

Isn't gambling illegal in Thailand so why would they be holding a world cup for gamblers?

If gambling will not kill you, robbing a gold shop will....well, one less gambler/robber/killer

Congratulations to the shop owner for shooting that violent idiot dead - well done!!! Should be a warning to others. Quick and thorough recovery to Mr. Chavalith!

But then: "Police said he suspected the intruder might be an addicted gambler and decided to rob the gold shop so that he would have money to settle his old debts so that he would be able to bet again at the forthcoming World Cup tournament." here the question - do we really care? Wouldn't have been a sentence about the chances for Mr. Chavalith's full recovery been a more useful and wiser choice?

Yes, usually we leave instant solutions in criminal cases to the Bar Stool Crime Scene Investigators (BS-CSI) here at Thai Visa.

But then the reporter said "he" was just speculating on the motivation, not pronouncing the case solved.
