Malaysian students observes Thai food safety in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, 12 November 2014 (NNT) – Students from Malaysia participated in the observation of the Siri Wattana market and the Halal food production to study the safety procedures of food production in Thailand.

Head of Chiang Mai Consumer Protection Division Isara Nanawichit has led the group of Food Science major students from Malaysia to observe the overall work and the food safety monitoring at the Siri Wattana market, Chiang Mai today.

The group participated in studying the government’s process on licensing food production companies and the inspection of the production process after the license has been granted.

Mr. Isara Nanawichit has said that the division conducts the inspection at the food companies with an A rating once per year. However, for the unlicensed companies, the division conducts the inspections more frequently. The division also regularly deploys its mobile unit to inspect the adulteration in vegetables and meat products at the marketplaces.

The group of students has also observed the Halal food production and marketing in Chiang Mai, as there are muslim communities which produce Halal food to sell both locally and internationally, while the province also has a Halal food inspection center as well.

Chiang Mai? Oh yes, that's where I got food poisoning from eating mussels at the night market ...

Wow! They got work permits for this study which could have been done by Thai students? Is this ASEAN in advance?

Thai food - safety ......... oxymoron !

Thai students have no need to do this study in Thailand. They already understand that Thai standards are second to none.

Of course Thai students should be sponsored to go and do a similar study in Singapore or Hong Kong markets, or maybe Tokyo or other major shopping centres.

In my experience, based mainly on past girlfriends, give a Thai a wok and they'll give you a banquet, However: To say they are not world leaders in food safety, is a bit of an understatement, while consulting them on food hygiene is akin to seeking advice on vegetarianism from a crocodile

Food safety and Thailand really should not even be in the same sentence.

The joke in Malaysia is they look North to see how bad things can become and look South to see how far they have fallen behind.
