'Defrauded' Briton Found Dead In Chiang Mai Guesthouse

By Khaosod Eng.

BANGKOK — A British man who reportedly lost 10 million baht in a fraud scheme was found dead in his guesthouse room in Chiang Mai province today.

The 38-year-old Briton had been dead for two days before cleaning staff at a guesthouse in Muang district found his body at 10 am this morning, police say.

According to Pol.Maj.Gen. Wichian Chaichomphu, a detective officer at Muang Chiang Mai Police Station, the British man appeared to have died from alcohol poisoning, though a more detailed autopsy is needed in order to establish a clear cause of death.

Khaosod English is withholding the name of the deceased until it is confirmed that his family has been notified.

Pol.Maj.Gen. Wichian said witnesses told police that the Briton was an Oxford graduate who came to Thailand "many years ago" and fell in love with a Thai girl at a bar in Chiang Mai. The woman then convinced him to invest 10 million baht in her fabricated "plan" to open an elephant-breeding business in the region, Pol.Maj.Gen. Wichian said.

shortest verse in the Bible

Very sad

They really don't want to say that suicide word again, do they.

So many dying, with strange circumstances. I think 3 or 4 just in these 2 weeks.

Very sad

Very sad indeed.

What a waste of a young life.

Whatever drove him to excessive drinking doesn't justify the loss of his life.

RIP young man, hope you find calm and tranquillity where you have gone now.

As a bit of an extra on this, from what my wife read in the Thai news sources, apparently his gf tricked him into spending 10M THB to buy the elephant sanctuary, then got him to work there.

However, they didn't actually buy it, and they just let him work there because they allow volunteers to work at the sanctuary. He apparently dding realize this, so worked there thinking it was his own business. Although by the time he found out the truth, his gf had done a runner.

Nothing strange about this one.

Just another guy who drank too much.

Got swindled by a Thai bargirl with a 6th grade education.

Finally drank himself to death.

Alcohol is an equal opportunity killer--it kills Oxford grads just as easy as it does guys born into abject poverty.

Tough break--was likely the sort who thought he was spending his fortune helping one of the worlds endangered animals.

Condolences.

A very sad story indeed, but as a graduate from Oxford how can you "buy" something without a piece of proof of ownership??

Anyone interested in my Sydney Bridge?? To prove that everything is correct, I will let you paint the bridge!!

Why would some guy give 300,000 dollars to a hooker? Blows my mind.

Sad indeed, the loss of a large sum of money has driven many people to their death. It must be a horrible situation when you realize you lost a lot of money, especially through fraud, but you just have to deal with it and move on with your life.

I see some of my friends in the US that lost large sums in the 2008 real estate crash still struggling with it mentally. Thinking about it constantly, it is so much negative thinking it seems to have a bad effect on their physical and mental health. For some it is just too much grief to handle, RIP.

What a sad story

So when is this girlfriend being arrested?

  • Popular Post

You've got to give it to these bar girls. They can run rings around even educated farangs. Obviously Western education isn't much use out in the real world.

Running an elephant breeding center. Come on, how could anyone fall for that one?

If there is really something like karma I hope this woman will somehow and somewhere face it..... too bad that thai justice has not been made for cheated foreigners only for thais cheated by foreigners....

  • Popular Post

The woman who did it won't be arrested. Just another con in LOS.

Very sad but all too common here.

"Khaosod English is withholding the name of the deceased until it is confirmed that his family has been notified." Good decision. Must be a first in Thailand.

Most education, doesn't teach being streetwise or common sense.

If that is the case, then I know of this gentleman. Very sad story and I hope his girlfriend rots in hell. Horrible horrible con.

Oh well, I'm sure the information I posted will be available in the morning when the rest of the English news catches up.
It is substantiated, but, whatever.

Anyway, RIP to the deceased. He was a good singer.

There should be a warning sign put up in arrivals at the airport warning of the dangers

of bar girls..... Seems to be an endless stream of sad stories like this one.... :-(

On a side note, with lots of Brits dying here, I wonder at what point their government

will step in.

I'm sure most know the dangers but go ahead anyway, so a warning wouldn't make any difference.

Some respect to the deceased. We all live in our own worlds in this vast universe we share together. Don't judge

who has the money now?

Maybe her Thai boyfriend ?? Would be a nice touch on the part of

the Thai government to recover the money and give it to the family

of the deceased.....

how long was this scam going on?

and, how did the press get that info?

This is yet another reason that Britons who come to Thailand must be warned about the multitude of scams that are waiting for them.

They get that heat, juicy women and power from the financial clout and think they have the midas touch with x, y and z. There's a midas touch alright, but it ain't the farang who have it when it comes to scams that's for sure!
