BANGKOK: -- The same wisdom for venereal disease and street coffee in Bangkok should also be applied to posting parcels: Package your goods not once, but twice!

The state mailing service known for damaging, throwing, folding, and totally losing parcels came up with a smart measure to prevent all of those things from happening this morning, by suggesting all senders protect their stuff with packing their packages in another branded, cardboard box.

"How to pack a box in a box for extra damage prevention," was the subject of a Thailand Post protip explaining how to put a box in another box.

This is such a great solution, especially if you want to pay for another box and extra weight.

I have received a couple of packages from The Thai post that looked like they went thru a couple of tours of duty from the war in Vietnam. I doubt another box would have helped.

every single box (irrespective of a small or the largest box) that i have sent from BKK to my address in Thailand has always been opened...even thou they say

you must inform them of any broken seal on the box?................ the only answer i get is opened in BKK for security

guess the staff will want more money now as its more time consuming to open 2 boxs every time

I sent a document EMS (600 baht) in mid October from here to Oz. Call last night saying it had be returned and sitting at the airport .. What do you want us to do? Send it again!! This message came month after I sent it! A phone call to Oz this morning to try and explain why it hadn't arrived by the due date!

Years ago I had documents sent to me from the USA. Thai customs wanted to charge me 2000 baht duty but a phone call later reduced it to 1000 Baht if the money was deposited in a "special bank account" since the papers were not really important I told them to toss them in the bin I'm not paying anything. A few days later my package was delivered.

Actually I received a camera in the UK double-boxed like this, with old scrunched-up newspaper as padding between the boxes. It arrived undamaged and in good condition so the method seems to work well. So it's not just Thailand that does this.

I can see the logic from Thai Post, they get paid twice for boxes they sell, then they still steal anything you do not send via EMS requiring a signature.

I would estimate that between 50-60% of all parcels / post that has been sent to me from outside of Thailand actually makes it. the other 40-50% just gets magic'ed away into the ether by the Thai Post.

I have to admit though, this is not Thai bashing, the UK post office workers are another bunch of thieving scum. (I actually had a distant family member who was employed by the Royal Mail 40 years ago that thought it was OK to steal premium bonds and other peoples parcels.

I also worked as a sub contractor for BRS (Roadline) way back when and their regular drivers were worse than Fagin! Everyone of their drivers knew which "Brown Envelopes" contained the porn mags and regularly used to open them and probably sit and toss themselves off before dropping off the already opened package.

Scum everywhere, they knew people were probably too embarrassed to complain.

Everything I order or send these days requires a signature or has to be warranteed via Pay Pal or such like as it is only getting worse.

One of my RC hobby suppliers used to ship stuff up EMS all the time but last week he refused as many shipments were being damaged. Ended up picking the shipment up from a trucking company in Chiang Mai.

Using the swine at DHL only makes you susceptible to dead body part X-Ray scanning and absolutely 100% guaranteed additional import charges.

I have found that using Amazon from the UK and paying their extortionate import fees is the best way to go. I have bought a fair amount of items from the UK using "PRIME" they pre charge for expected import duties etc. but up until now, every single import charge has been refunded.

Send it the other way...Thai to UK even using EMS I was skinned by the UK Customs, they charged a 40 quid import fee on a second hand motherboard that was shipped from me on E bay with a value of 70 quid, and EMS postage of 35 Quid. Work the profit out on that sale!

Guess same in most state postal service. I agree that to prevent pilferage you need to register with tracking numbers and requests for a signature. Better than double box it which will not guarantee that it will not be opened for inspection or get stolen.

takes 10 weeks or so and when they arrive are very beat up ,

My local parcel postman delivered an ex UK registered parcel by throwing it over the gate into the carport, this whilst I was out. I did not see it when I returned home and backed my SUV in as usual and heard a crunching sound as I ean over it. My wife was peeved to recieve an expensive Estee Lauder cosmetic set in flat condition with very mixed creams!

She took it to the Post Office andfiled a complaint. To my surprise, a couple of weeks later she received financial compensation.

Reading all the comments, you must be very unlucky and also coming from a nice developed country with good postal service.

Back in Hungary, our post service lost most of the not signed-for deliveries, if they contained anything of value (even a tshirt) - I remember roughly 3 out of 4 vanishing.

In Thailand, I had only one parcel lost over the years, from more than 20 not signed-for deliveries, and never received anything damaged. (I mostly use EMS anyway, never had problem with that)

The only thing disturbing me is the "it was too heavy to deliver to you, here is a notification, go get it at the post office" excuse, which happens sometimes, one time even for a CD in an envelope.

OTOH....based on the posts on this thread. I've been fortunate!

In 10-iears residng here, I've received numerous parcels and mail,

from the USA to Thailand as well as sent mail to the US.

All arrived in good shape both here and in the US;; never a crushed box.

I've been assessed duty only twice, out of 10-shipments, for duty able goods from the US,

but feel 8 out of 10 w/o duty was a win!
