BANGKOK: -- The impeachment process against three big political figures of the previous government, including former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, may affect national reform work, National Legislative Assembly (NLA) president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai admitted yesterday.

He said it is imperative that the NLA be impartial and adhere to what is just and lawful in conducting the impeachment process against Yingluck and the others. The other two are former Parliament president and House of Representatives speaker Somsak Kiartsuranont and former Senate speaker Nikom Wairatpanich.

"The NLA must be impartial and must not be seen to be taking a particular side or having a bias against any side. This will become a shield that will protect the NLA," Pornpetch said. "More importantly, it will result in the lessening of conflict between people in society and create more understanding. If we create hatred by demonstrating that the NLA makes decisions that are unjust then that's the end. Whatever follows will lack credibility," he warned, in reference to the impeachment process and debate in the NLA scheduled for later this week.

Besides the three prominent figures, Pornpetch said impeachment would also be considered against 38 former MPs and senators. Another lot of impeachment, he said, will involve 200 more people and was yet to be submitted by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). The NLA president admitted he was worried it would take away a lot of meeting time from the NLA's other work.

Pornpetch said it was impossible that the result, no matter how it goes, would please every one, as one's perception of the decision would depend on one's predisposition. It is unclear at present whether Yingluck will be present in person at the NLA to defend herself on Friday as scheduled. The process next week will involve the NACC detailing charges against the accused to the NLA followed by the accused defending themselves in front of the House, and the House asking questions followed by the decision of the House.

They didn't twig that this would be the accusation before they started this whole impeachment and reform process.

So I guess this will mean that because it is apparently impossible for this junta to walk and whistle at the same time, they will add another 6 months to a year to the reform process.

P.S. Why is tabling reform completely uncompatiable with an impeachment? why cant they complete the impeachment and have the new constitution ready and finished to go with the moment any cases are finished? Assuming they want to actually get on with the reform of course. Hmmmm.

To do nothing will show future politicians that there is no accountability and they can do whatever they want with complete impunity.

The law is the law and must apply to everyone including politicians, if politicians try to subvert the law they must answer to the law.

This is not a matter of trying to please anyone or everyone it is a matter of setting a standard for the behavior of future politicians.

If it puts someone's nose out of joint so be it, for those are the people who are only pushing their own agenda, mostly in blind support of a particular party for their own (in many cases financial) benefit.

He's right but no matter what decision gets handed down it won't go down well with either sides.

All i hear now is back peddling now from the court, prosecutors, and current government when they mention legal action against Yingluck. Their case must not be that strong if they are all in unison about this or there are rumblings from the people from behind the scene that this time it might not go over as easily with the populous as past coups.

Maybe the NLA will have to work a bit harder then. If some members are not up to the task then replace them. The job needs to be done and it needs to be done judiciously and with efficiency. Just get on with it.

Indeed you are, you will never accept that your beloved Yingluck of her criminal fugitive brother could ever do any wrong.

You cant understand that not supporting the previous corrupt administration and wanting them brought to justice is not supporting the military but supporting the rule of law.

For myself I don't support anyone I look at things objectively, the military has done some good things they have also made some mistakes, saying that does not mean I approve of any coup.

You on the other hand refuse to acknowledge any good the military has done or any bad Thaksin and his proxy administration has done, extreme bias, right.

In reality a sizeable % of poor farmers got nothing, and many farmers who did were left unpaid for months, many committed suicide and in the end the junta organized the payments due to them.

Now we see suggestions that one of the red leaders, n....... (bring gasoline, we turn turn Bangkok into a sea of flames etc etc) is well involved in a big trucking

company used to transport many tons of rice which seems lacking in proper paperwork.

Is this the 'they' you mean?

'take away meeting time' is the least important point.

Showing respect for the law and the proper process of the law and showing examples of punishment (where appropriate) is much more important.
