That's 50,000 baht to someone pocket, the police station has a revolving door policy, in and out,

pay the 1,000 baht fine and away you go and see you soon....

It's only 100 baht a head.

At least it was last time i got pulled.....................sad.png

This is incredible bullshit. If they really think that for improving the image of Pattaya they need to round up prositutes, then they should do it not only in the beach but in the Walking street and other bars too. But they stopped just before the start of the Walking Street. That's what the article says very clearly. To me it speaks that they are not fighting with the prostitutes but with the freelancers. This I call corruption and this is why I have no respect to police.

This is just supporting bars, so they get more barfines. Police should arrest drugdealers instead but then they lose income I guess. every single day I am offered drugs on the beach. They do nothing. And ladies are stupid too. They are not breaking any law by standing on the beach. It is incredible hypocricy here in thailand...

And I really don't understand how one improves the image of the Capital of Prostitution by rounding up prostitutes. If they really stop the prostitution here one day, then they stop the bars and hotels and restaurants and schools and everything. Then they can bring the fishing nets out again...

"they should do it not only in the beach but in the Walking street and other bars too."

The point here is that the girls soliciting on the streets are committing an offence, the girls dancing in bars are not. What the go-go dancers do after they leave the bar they work in is up to them, it's not the responsibility of the bar owners.

"They are not breaking any law by standing on the beach."

They are, soliciting and loitering are offences.

'Tis if they're bar fined.......................wink.png

Often wondered why they (police) don't just open a toll booth and charge the boys and girls 100 baht a night.

It would save all that running about by the police and volunteers.

Time saved, they could be off doing something useful..........................wink.png

No one with any sense would use beach road whores. There is a reason they don't work in the bars. Only the stupid tourists who end up drugged and their belongings stolen will risk taking one back.

...although I am partial to the stories of multiple Indian men getting caught by the old "ladyboy under the bed" scam. That one never gets old.

Make the fine meaningful and each subsequent time they are caught, it doubles. STD and drug tests would probably be a wise thing to do as well.

Great job. Get the girls/boys off the streets and back into the bars.

If you were a bar owner, how many of them would you be prepared to employ ? They mightnt all be thieves and rogues, but they're not the cream of the crop either.

This was nothing for them to feel ashamed about because sexual based guilt in particular is not part of the Buddhist belief system - unlike the other predominant religions that have shaped/warped

WHAT, do not feel ashamed about being a prostitute but only if you are a Buddhist. So are you a Buddhist prostitute apologist only ?

This begs the question why prostitution is illegal anyway. Who cares what a women (or man or some middle version) does with her body. The most beautiful women in the world are getting "paid for it" in some way also, just ask their boyfriends or husbands or worse yet, ex-husbands. Why can't the girls who really need the cash use what they have to make ends meet? Shameful that government, this one or any other, can determine that it is unlawful to touch someones dirty parts with yours and then tip for it. What nonsense. Punishing people for fulfilling an instinctual necessity is like taxing breathing.

Prostitution is regulated in Thailand, not illegal per se. Promiscuous soliciting like the Beach Road girls/ladyboys is an offence; barfining a girl/ladyboy from a bar or gogo is fine.

If we get rid of all the girls, tourism will increase! Is that the attitude? Take a walk along Beach Road in Pattaya, the girls usually do no harm (ok, some do but that's the same the world over) and they have no other way to make a living for themselves and their families. Actually it's quite good entertainment to just watch the girls "working" for customers. How many millions of baht is this industry worth to Thailand every year? And how many of these girls (and their families) are now going hungry and/or unable to pay their rent due to lack of tourist customers. Has the General made provision for them? Or does he not care?

I don't like but the truth is you will never get rid of these street walkers. The Johns who use their services need to be careful and make them provide ID to security guards at hotel or condo. This will reduce the risk of getting robbed but HIV and STD is another matter..... Condoms

I suppose the arrests are for the police database, to keep a record of who or what is trafficking on the Beach Road.

Of course a fine of 20,000.00 baht instead of 500 would fix the problem overnight. That'd be 100 nights in jail at a rate off 200 baht per day if one could not pay the fine. This is not going to happen.

The point is that the (little boy) cops should grow-up, and get serious about law-enforcement, instead of harrassing (extorting money from) those mostly young (already frightened) country girls, who are just trying to make a living for their familys back home. The comment about HIV, STDs & Condoms, is a totally different (Public Health) topic of discussion. Stay focused on the whistling.gifP's topic, relating to what the Pattaya cops are calling, their effort for cleaning up Pattaya's public image. The only thing they (the cops) will manage to accomplish, is to put a lot of Thai women out-of-work. Duh!

The Pattaya Police need to go get themselves a real job, i.g., busting the Jet Ski and SuperBike Rental Rip-Off, and Thai Teenager Street Robbery gangs, instead. The Walking Street ladies are everywhere in the world. So what, for heaven' sake? At least those ladies provide an honest public service whistling.gif

Right on

I think you should re-read the news article. They were fined B 100 each for a total of B 5000.

PS: I see several others have already caught the error.

On what do you base the cr*p you spout? Have you seen them "not going hungry"? What other way do they have to make a living in Thailand? No social security here. Why do you think they became prostitutes in the first place? Hunger? no money? Oh, maybe they just enjoy the life on the streets.....right.

Had a fair few conversations with the girls working - paying for parents and/or kids - is one motive - but many others basically said they feel they no good at any other job - "this job is good money for little work" - one girl I know very well was on about 60-80k from working a bar - too lazy to be a gogo girl cos they on their feet all the time, some of the gogo girls are doing well on 70-100k a month.

So my impression is getting more money than a bank manager and lifestyle with the sisters attracts a lot of these women rather than dire poverty.

ofcourse many reasons why people choose that line of work, but many jobs on Thia standard wages are available and many many millions seem to survive quit well in Thailand without having to sell themselves and they also have parents and kids to support.

Street prostitutes will earn nothing like their gogo sisters and have none of the "security" offered by bar work.

This thread is about the lowest rung of the P4P world.

Most became prostitutes because they are lazy. Thailand has a very low rate of unemployment, less than 1 %. (deleted)

Please - as a long time resident , I would like to propose a change in terminology to help improve the image

of poor Pattaya. The young ladies one sees in the afternoon and evening should not be called "prostitutes";

rather, in keeping with the good general's campaign to bring happiness back to LOS, why not call them

Beach Hostesses??? :)

Beach Hostesses.

Seriously, one of the best proposals I've read in some time.

Silly old school comment.

They're not lazy, that's why they are properly called sex workers.
