Several dozen people gathered in central Bangkok to honor those killed in the deadly attack on a satirical magazine in France, 8 Jan 2015.

BANGKOK — Several dozen people gathered in central Bangkok Thursday evening to honor those killed in the deadly attack on a satirical magazine in France yesterday.

The group lit candles and lay flowers around signs printed with the words “Je Suis Charlie” and other phrases that have come to symbolize solidarity with the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, that was the target of the shooting.

Two masked gunmen broke into the magazine’s office in Paris yesterday and opened fire on journalists and cartoonists who were gathered for an editorial meeting, killing twelve, including two police officers.

“I could not sleep last night after I heard about the news, and when I woke up the next day I felt like I needed to do something,” said Chiranuch Premchaiporn, a journalist at Prachatai who helped organize the vigil in front of the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center.

Witnesses say the gunmen screamed “Allahu Akbar” during the shooting, which the President of France has labeled an “act of terrorism.” The magazine regularly poked fun at religions, including Islam, and was firebombed in 2011 after it published a spoof issue “guest edited” by the Prophet Muhammad.

Shortly after the massacre, crowds began gathering in cities around the world to condemn the attack, with many holding up pens and pencils to show their support for free speech.

There are many in these countries who hated these journalists for what they did. Yes, probably the majority

That doesn't mean they all supported there murders in this cowardly fashion.

I don't condone how the countries you mention feel about their religion and how they react when their intolerance causes them to react and protest.

However to expect them to mount vigils for the victims of this cowardly, despicable act is just plain ridiculous.

I've worked and lived in Kuwait and knew Kuwaitis who would be horrified by this attack and would condemn it in private.

To do so in public would be suicide.

It's wrong but these countries are completely intolerant of any form of deviation from their narrow minded view of the world, that's how the ruling elites there want them and keep them that way to control them.

You know full well that this form of control is not just restricted to Muslim countries.

Look to those in the West and in centers of Islamic learning who have protested these murders and stop branding all Muslims the same way.

I knew personnally two of the cartoonists who were shot at Charlie and I can't begin to describe how shocked I am today.

One thing I can say about these very talented, funny and courageous guys is that they loved nothing more than tolerance and that's what they stood for, always. If some warmongerers want to call it 'political correctness' then I guess it means that political correctness (unlike intolerance) is not always ridiculous.

They made fun, sometimes aggressively, of bigots and extremists. ALL bigots and extremists, ONLY bigots and extremists. The issue that was so controversial and caused their headquarters to be torched never once made fun of the Prophet himself and/or Islam as a religion, it made fun of the demented bastards who hijack his legacy and kill in his name. Al-Sisi is not the only leader in the Islamic world who has called for action, indeed one Islamic groups' core tenants (Ahmadi Muslims) is denouncing Islamic extremism, yet rare to read any reports about them. Most people will dismiss out of hand any effort to commence a movement to bring about change, unfortunately thus reenforcing the Islamic extremist message.

Well, now, France with this outrage can join Pakistan & Nigeria with their girls' school massacres & kidnapping for brides, And England with it's subway bombing and murder of the off duty guardsman.

Have any of them got enough b@//s to step around the PC nonsense & see this for what it is; fascist attacks to overthrow governments & set up Sharia law states. IN parts of UK the police don't go so they have defacto Sharia law already in places.
