BANGKOK – The armed men seen standing next to conservative Thai activist-turned-monk Suthep Thaugsuban in a photo that has gone viral on social media were not his personal guards, the monk’s brother said today.

Thani Thaugsuban was referring to a widely-shared photo of Suthep seated in a temple, flanked by two black-clad men who appear to be holding a submachine gun and an assault rifle.

According to Thani, the men were not his personal guards, as many internet users had speculated, but rather local security officers in Pattani, a southern province where authorities are combatting a simmering Islamic insurgency.

"Local officials worked to prevent any incident, and they dispatched some officers to take care of Phra Suthep," Thani told Manager ASTV. "Phra Suthep was not personally involved in the matter."

have to agree with Costas here, monks are murdered in the area as well as the terrorists attacking innocent people, only right to supply armed guards for anyone with a name that is recognisable as being high up, perfect target for the muslim scumbags. Pity some people only see their personal bias and not the facts, this was pretty obvious to me and I cant stand the man.

Absolutely. Normal practise is a squad of soldiers protecting low ranking monks. Also looks so much better, perception-wise. Shall I inform PM Prayut that a perfect opportunity was missed or will you?

There was a guy in Bangkok last year that looks just like this monk.

That guy led a mob and shut down the city, got people killed and even threatened the PM and her kids.

That guy is probably in jail now since we have a legitimate PM.

As was pointed out, he was not in the region in a religious capacity. He was there for personal profit, shilling his book.

Do you think it is appropriate that a monk be engaged in a business venture that detracts from his religious vocation, and demands that the state provide resources to facilitate the distribution of a political tract? This man is the epicentre of corruption in the south.

Will he be doing his next book signing in the north?

If the current government is serious about corruption, I would hope it would be from a prison cell.
