40 injured, 30 seriously, as bus overturns in Buri Ram

BURI RAM: -- A Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani air-conditioned bus overturned on a road in Buri Ram's Prakone Chai district at 2am yesterday, injuring 40 passengers.

Of them, 13, including two under five, were in serious condition.

The victims were rushed to Prakone Chai Hospital. Six severe cases were referred to Buri Ram Hospital.

The bus driver told police that the road was slippery because there was construction on it and heavy downpours at the time.

In Nakhon Ratchasima's None Sung district, a 10-wheel oil tanker hit four workers affixing reflective markers on Mittrapap Road in the morning.

Two workers one of whom was named as Chokchai Khiewaram and the contractor, Ratchasak Charoenkulchaiyaporn, 35, died at the scene while another worker, Suriya Akkachart, was badly injured.

The driver, identified as Pongrit Boonra, was also killed because his truck crashed into the back of the six-wheel truck of the contractor.

I wonder if this accident happened between Nang Rong and Prachonchai? That stretch of 30km road must be one of the most dangerous in Southern Issan.

You could do the write up on these stories in your sleep, brakes failed, driver did a runner.

It did. and now with 70 km of highway consrtution in progress on the 214 from Nang Rong o Prasat it will be a graveyard.

I don't know about Thailand, but in the drivers instruction manual back home, it says drive to the conditions of the road! If the weather dictates that the speed limit is not safe because of bad weather then SLOW DOWN!!

These clowns are responsible for their passengers lives but since there is no accountability, enforcement or education on these matters, the carnage continues. Is Thailand trying to move up one spot to take over first place in the world for road deaths?

Too many of these accidents happening. One thing for sure, never travel at night in a van or bus.

Yep, many of these bus drivers have no concept of responsibility for their passengers.

For that reason I make sure I'm nowhere near the front of the bus these days - at least I can't see just how bad the driiving is! And definitely travel in broad daylight!

Poor Thais, they don't have a clue about wearing seat belts either. Most buses have 'em, but Thai passengers look at me stupid as I'm belting up.

Many of the people in this crash would probably have been better off if belted.

I saw the bus that flipped in Buriram, still parked by the side of the highway. It is amazing no one died. I could see the bus rolled completely over it's long axis, and one entire side of upper windows and roof was in the seats.

I'm used to driving back to Nangrong from the airport at around midnight and being overtaken by these buses. It's not just speeding but lack of judgement, erratic driving and late braking. Quite simply, they have no appreciation of hazards or risk, they drive on their reactions. I've seen overturned buses for years and we will continue to see it happen again as there are no proposals to deal with it.

Stopped using interprovincial buses..I fly now or drive myself.

yep that is a problem, and Thai not enough, more of a problem.

..double decker buses were declared illegal when those 35 or so school kids got killed south of Korat. I still see them about. Many other proposals, decisions, advices have been issued over the years. Buy an amulet and hope for the best.

i remember something about this in driving school 30 years ago..... Wait for it..........

Oh, you should always adjust your speed accordingly to match road and weather conditions.....

But TIT and that would be unheard of to actually slow down....

Name and shame them!!!! on Thai news they actually mention the name..... why not on TV?

I pased this two days ago it was a wonder no one killed.

This was one of the most deadly roads in Thailand now more dangerous with the road works

Used this company recently, well the bus was the exact same livery........... short 2 hour trip but suspension clearly shot and oil fumes coming from the AC, the attendant just smiled when I mentioned it.................many of.the Thai passengers and myself were all covering our mouths etc to try and combat the stench.

Saw a bus a week ago same company and thought it was my eyes or the effects of a heavy night before, this bus was bouncing front to back front like a kangaroo on yaba, clearly something very very wrong.

Poor maintenance is a major cause in many of these accidents.

Nakon chai air ..excellent,Phetsapert tours very good, Chan tours pretty good and 999 Thai transport, Yellow bus all have reasonable records, but with the lesser companies using knackered pass their shelf life buses it becomes a safety lottery.
