4 soldiers killed in Yala

The Nation

YALA: -- SUSPECTED insurgents killed four soldiers in an ambush in Yala province Wednesday evening by hiding behind a truck and opening fire on the victims, who were in plain clothes and travelling in a sedan.

A manhunt was underway at press time as of last night, for the insurgents who were seen fleeing towards Rusoh district in neighbouring Narathiwat province.

The attackers also stole three assault rifles as well as a service pistol from the victims and scattered spikes behind them as they were escaping.

Police said the victims were returning from a sporting event at a school in Raman district, and that the attackers were tracking the sedan in a 10wheel truck, before opening fire at the scene in tambon Balor.

Four Thai soldiers killed in deep south ambush
AFP

BANGKOK: -- Four Thai soldiers returning from a football match were shot dead in an ambush in the country's deep south, police said Thursday.

The attack took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Raman district of Thailand's Yala province, local police said.

More than 6,300 people, the majority of them civilians, have died in over a decade of conflict pitting troops and police against rebels seeking greater autonomy for the Muslim-majority provinces bordering Malaysia.

"They (the soldiers) were on the way back to barracks after a friendly football match with local residents at the district office," Lieutenant Colonel Chanwut Raksapram, Raman's deputy police commander, told AFP by telephone.

The soldiers were dressed in plainclothes and were ambushed by five to six gunmen, Chanwut added.

"All of them were killed at the attack site and the gunmen took all of their four guns," he said.

Images carried by local media showed the soldiers' bloodstained corpses lying on the road next to a black car riddled with bullet holes, which the victims had been travelling in on their way back from the government office.

It is not uncommon for militants to seize weapons from dead soldiers in attacks since they have limited access to weaponry.

The estimated 60,000 troops and police stationed in the three southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat face near-daily roadside bomb attacks and ambushes from shadowy rebel groups.

They melt away into remote communities broadly opposed to rule by Buddhist-majority Thailand, which colonised the region more than a century ago.

While they are frequently the target of attacks, security forces also stand accused of widespread human rights abuses of the southern population.

Those include killings of civilians in raids on suspected militant hideouts as well as stifling the distinctive local culture through clumsy -- and often forced -- assimilation schemes.

Thailand's junta, which took over in a coup a year ago, has vowed to reboot a stalled peace process with several rebel groups operating in the deep south but so far there has been little progress.

The south often experiences an upswing in violence in the weeks before Ramadan, which begins later this month.

In a separate attack on Wednesday in neighbouring Pattani province, eight soldiers were lightly wounded in a car bomb attack, local police said.

all terrorists are cowards, they dont have the balls to fight face to face , instead they kill from behind or murder women and children. The only way to treat these terrorists is to have shoot to kill orders on them all. no capture, assassinate them and put prices on their heads as a reward to anyone for killing them, watch the villagers race out and earn some quick money, the gutless terrorists will run for the hills and not be game to go anywhere near civilization knowing that they will be shot by everyone that sees them. The only good terrorist is a dead one

Putting prices on their heads means nothing mate it's never really made "villagers" rush out either, there's the odd case, but generally these villagers are between a rock and a hard place, most insurgents are kinsfolk, and there's the fear of retribution too.

Didn't see many villages turning in IRA terrorist in the north or the south of Irelend, and they certainly didn't get turned in once they fled to the USA where the good people of Boston welcomed them like heroes as they seriously believed in "the cause"

No matter what you and I think mate, one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter and some of those terrorist scum went onto become politicians and even heads of state, we live in a very fickle society.

But of course 4 more lives lost in this insurgency with less than 6 months to the end of the war, it's going to be a long and bloody road, hell even som folks here said it was quiet down in the south but that's not really the case!!

Any outcry from the locals about this ?.

Any village meetings demanding to know how it could have happened ?.

Any people rushing forwards with information about who the cold blooded murderers are ?.

No, I thought not.

I hope the Army get lots of pictures of every dead soldier to show at the next investigation when someone local gets killed in a firefight.

Same argument the British made when U.S. Colonialists waged guerrilla warfare and refused to line up as was done in the Old World.

Would that be the investigations into every UNARMED local that gets killed in a firefight ?

Since the coup in May 2014 the military has claimed that insurgent actions have been significantly lowered, claiming the success of its Thung Yang Daeng Model - similar to the failed USA's Vietnamese Pacification program used in the Vietnam war. One might now perceive that Malay-Thai insurgent actions have actually increased.

However, the one thing that the military has never accomplished goes to the credit of the Yingluck regime - actually starting a peace process with the insurgents. But what can you expect of a military that has been presumbly ineffective in detecting and apprehending thousands of illegal Rohingyas immigrants moving through the South.

A very high risk for the locals to speak out. Even local Imams who have spoken out in support of a peace process, to reduce the deaths and suffering, have been murdered by the 'insurgents'.

Must be really difficult to control the insurgency when members of the security forces are also heavily involved e.g. assisting smuggling gangs, some of whose funds help the insurgents. Plus the counter productive extrajudicial killings, sometimes because of business disagreements with locals, by security forces
