Official: 2 dead in movie theater shooting, including gunman

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a movie theater in Lousiana on Thursday night, killing at least one person and injuring at least six others before shooting himself, officials said.

The shooting took place at the Grand Theatre in the city of Lafayette, said Clay Henry, vice president of operations for Acadian Ambulance.

Henry said eight people were brought to the hospital and that two, including the gunman, were pronounced dead on arrival.

Henry said emergency workers got the call to go to the theater about 7:30 p.m. He did not immediately have any additional information.

The Daily Advertiser quoted City Marshal Brian Pope as saying that the shooter turned the gun on himself after firing at the others, and that six people were injured.

The shooting happened about 20 minutes into a 7 p.m. showing of the movie "Train Wreck," according to the newspaper, which quoted theatergoer Katie Domingue.

"We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker," Domingue told the newspaper. Domingue said she saw "an older white man" standing up and shooting down into the theater, but not in her direction.

"He wasn't saying anything. I didn't hear anybody screaming either," Domingue said.

Domingue told the newspaper she heard about six shots before she and her fiance ran to the nearest exist, leaving behind her shoes and purse.

And the official GOP response: "If everyone in that theater had been armed, this never would have happened!"

Just wanted to get ahead of the news wires.

If everyone in that theatre had been armed it would of been an absolute massacre. Imagine all the gun ho fools recklessly shooting at each other at random as they struggled to determine who was who in the zoo.

What a circus.

Official: 3 dead in movie theater shooting, including gunman

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a movie theater in Lousiana on Thursday evening, killing two people and injuring at least seven others before shooting himself, officials said.

The gunman, a 58-year-old "lone white male," fired his weapon "numerous times" before shooting himself at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette, Police Chief Jim Craft told a news conference.

Craft said police know the gunman's identity but are not releasing it. He said the shooter's body was still inside the theater and that a coroner was on the scene. Earlier in the evening, Acadian Ambulance Vice President Clay Henry had told The Associated Press that the shooter was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.

Craft said those who were injured had injuries ranged from non-life-threatening to critical.

There were about 100 people in the theater at the time of the shooting, Sgt. Brooks David of the Louisiana State Police told CNN.

The shooting happened about 20 minutes into a 7 p.m. showing of the movie "Trainwreck," The Louisiana Advertiser quoted theatergoer Katie Domingue as saying.

The Louisiana shooting occurred three years after James Holmes entered a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver and opened fire during the premier of a Batman film, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others.

A jury last week quickly convicted Holmes on 165 counts of murder, attempted murder and other charges, rejecting defense arguments that he was insane and suffering delusions that drove him to the July 20, 2012, attack. The trial entered a new phase this week as the same jurors decide whether Holmes should die for his crimes.

The jury decided unanimously Thursday that the Colorado attack was cruel enough to justify the death penalty. But jurors must first hear the defense's arguments for a life term before deciding whether Holmes, 27, will be sentenced to death. The sentencing phase could last up to a month.

Lafayette is about 60 miles (96 kilometers) west of Baton Rouge.

It is a small world, especially in the buisness of oil. Bkk has quite a few expats from the Lafayette area.

Some of us are still waiting to know more information or have had family and/or friends affected.

My cousin lost a close friend in this.

3 were killed (if you choose to count the murder), 7-9 injured.

Respect would be a considerate thing right now.

Bonjour! from the other side of the Sabine, some years ago. I am truly sorry to hear about the shooting. I spent a bit of time in Lafayette, much more around Vinton/Lake Charles, hop, skip and a jump from Orange. Those were good days. My first wife was Cajun. She and her mom taught me how to cook what Cajun meals I know and I still do over here. I've lost what little Cajun I learned but never my love of the music, Cajun, "Swamp Pop", the dances, and the food. I believe I can still do a pretty good "Cajun Waltz".

My sympathies go out to all those families and victims.

Typical leftist socialist response.

Clearly the answer is to ban cinemas. Then there wouldn't be any gun violence in cinemas.

Wouldn't have happened if everybody had body armour and automatic machine guns with infrared scopes.

I'm sure they could smuggle all that in in one of those jumbo popcorn's! Why not a flame thrower or better yet a tank! crazy.gif

Here's what the OP says:

"A jury last week quickly convicted Holmes on 165 counts of murder, attempted murder and other charges, ..."

Not all 165 charges were for murder.

Typical quote as that is the GOP and NRA's standard response to mass killings in America. Sad but true

It is actually a very Thai response to things. Address everything except the issue at hand!

Kid throws stones in the school yard and one hits a fellow student. If all the kids had had stones then it would never have happened. This is exactly what gun fetishists are saying.

It's not exactly the same thing. I think though, some people might be more careful if they think someone will be throwing stones back. It doesn't apply to kids, though, because they aren't known to think or realize the consequences of their action.

I do get your point though.

Resolute Congress Passes Second Amendment Again

WASHINGTON: Easily securing the requisite two-thirds majorities in the House and Senate, a resolute United States Congress responded to the ongoing national debate on gun rights Tuesday by passing the Second Amendment again. This is a very important issue, and I'm glad Democrats and Republicans were able to work together to take swift action, said Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, joining members of both houses in celebrating the measures nearly unanimous approval less than a week after a mass shooting in a Louisiana movie theater.

Wouldn't your article be better placed in the "Jokes" section than the "News" section?

The Onion is hardly a quotable source for breaking news.
