LOEI: -- The government will press ahead with the construction of a cable car to the Phu Kradung mountainous retreat because 99.9 percent of the people agree with the project, Deputy Prime Minister Thanasak Patimaprakorn said on Thursday.

The deputy prime minister who oversees tourism and sports affairs said that construction which would take 2-3 years would commence once the environment impacts assessment study is completed which will take about six months.

He claimed that opinion surveys conducted by different governmental units from various groups of people from both the private and government sectors and members of the public showed that most of them agreed with the project citing its economic gains, convenience for tourists and job opportunities for the locals.

Regarding concern over environment impacts from the project, the deputy prime minister said that the problem was controllable. He assured that no trees would be cut as new technology would be employed which does not require the cutting of trees to make way for towers.

General Thanasak also assured that the cable car would not ruin the view of the mountainous retreat.

99.9%! Seems to be the result of a lot of polls under the NCPO. If they could only rid themselves of that pesky .01%

The US ambassador moved from North Korea to here and did not need to learn new numbers.

Pimay1, said it before I could get my fingers working. Another accident looking to happen, odds are it will have accidents during construction and then when the public is given access they better have an emergency vehicle on standby during operating hours.

It seems that from the idea stage thru completation of any project, maintance and safety are not in the plans nor budget. It will be another place for people to go for a holiday with a fair chance of being injured, at least.

A ruling general who seized power and now can insist his own pet project goes ahead? And wherever he goes, he is surrounded by armed guards who will shoot to kill any such elephant, should it foolishly decide to charge. Not that it would, as what sane wild elephant would hang around, while a bunch of loud men in military fatigues descend out the sky in a noisy helicopter or three?

This project has been on the cards for years, and has been kicked into touch, either because of environmental complaints or because the government of the day has been booted out and the process needs to start all over again. But being a military government with perhaps a year or two more time to govern, then there is a chance it may go ahead for real this time. Especially, as no one is allowed to publically protest against.........coffee1.gif
