Under consideration stamp for Extension of stay

Featured Replies

I just applied for my yearly extension of stay based on marriage with the normal 30 day under consideration stamp in my passport. I have a situation back home where I need to leave Thailand for a week so I will get a re entry permit at the airport. Does anybody know if the 30 day under consideration stamp is sufficient enough information for the airline check in staff to let me fly as I don't have an outgoing ticket leaving Thailand as I reside in Thailand. Normally when I travel outside Thailand they just want to see my yearly visa and let me check in with no problem. If it helps I can show them my previous year visa which has the same 30 day stamp which follows the extension of stay stamp.

As long as you have a re-entry permit you will have no problem traveling and re-entering.

As said it is the re-entry permit that allows you entry so if your flight arrives before that expiration date you will be fine - but you may have to explain to airline staff - and insist on supervisor if they do not understand it is the same as a visa.

As long as you understand the reentry into Thailand must be before the expiry of the reentry permit, no problem.

Ref re-entry permit; can anyone explain its necessity? I went on Tuesday to Pattaya & it took just 20 minutes. I was the only customer at 4pm. There were 8 assistants (doing other things besides Re-entry permits I'm sure) but it started me wondering about the process. If they made ALL long term permission-to-stay 'visas' multi-entry & charged a little bit more, they could save work/paper + make more money.

It's the same madness that requires I write in my new car book every time I want to go out at night. Why is this required? In fact why do I need red plates anyway & have to wait for the white ones.

The Lord and Thai officialdom move in mysterious ways. All the address reporting regulations also make no sense. Many other examples. Just learn "mai pen rai" and go with the flow.

Because it's the law in Thailand, where you are.

Illogical maybe, but as a sign near the local rules for pool in my local said "We don't care what you do where you come from, this is what you do where you are".

Back on topic, I've had no issues with getting and using re-entry permits on the under-consideration stamp, on one return (specifically to visit immigration) the IO asked if I really wanted a stamp for one day :)

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

As someone who never leaves Thailand why would I want to pay for compulsory Re Entry Permits?

More than happy the way things are.

You are in the country on an extension of stay or a permission to stay, neither of which is a visa which would allow you to enter Thailand ... you don't have a visa. The re-entry permit acts as a visa. Staying in the country is one thing. Crossing a border is something else.

Goes back to the misunderstanding of so many people who have had extensions for many years and think the extension is a visa. It isn't.

The Lord and Thai officialdom move in mysterious ways. All the address reporting regulations also make no sense. Many other examples. Just learn "mai pen rai" and go with the flow.

All of it is written in the immigration act of 1979 which has not been touched in those 37 years. It seems for some reason the people with authority to change it are scared to touch it for some reason. It is as if the establishment and bureaucrats within the ministries evolved have put a do not touch warning on it.

In particular it baffles me that nothing has been done in all this time about the quirky visa "use by" arrangements and procedures. Visas issued to non-nationals by practically every other country across this great planet of ours mean literally what they say on the tin: namely, that you can enter the country from the first date but must leave by the second (expiry) date. Not in Thailand, though, and the result is much confusion (and endless discussions on here as to the difference between a visa and an extension of stay).

How nice it would be if we could simply trot down to our local immigration office each year for a new visa (in the literal sense) provided that we met the relevant financial, etc criteria for our particular non-immigrant status - with no longer any need for re-entry permits, border runs or trips to Thai embassies/consulates in places such as Savannakhet, Vientiane or Penang. Dream on for at least another 37 years, though, I strongly suspect....closedeyes.gif

Korea Air has a supervisor question me exactly about this. I showed him the stamp that said in English I "Must appear at Immigration on xx/xx/xxxx". He was happy with that and the re-entry permit but it was tense for a few minutes and the lower tier staff was leaning towards not letting me on the flight. Keep in mind upon entry the IO will only likely give you permission until exactly that date as well. In my case he gave me two day entry. I suppose it does not matter because when your 30 day consideration period is long since past and you still don't have your extension approved you are apparently still safe.

I think if you did a little research you would there are other countries that do it the same way as Thailand.

You might also find that some countries have worse ways of doing it. I lived and worked in a country that issued visas valid for 6 or 12 months that allowed you to leave an enter as many times as you wanted to but had to apply for another visa when it expired at an embassy or consulate. For the 6 month visa just a letter from my employer was needed, To get the one year it had to be applied for within the country and when it was approved it was sent to the embassy or consulate you put on the application when it was applied for. The one year visa also required a police check and a medical certificate before you applied for it at the designated embassy or consulate.

The normal US tourist visa is 10 years - but you are not allowed to stay that time.

rolleyes.gif Why should you have to pay for a exit re-entry permit?

Because if you are on a one year extension by reason of Marriage to a Thai (it is NOT a marriage visa) then that extension ENDS when you exit Thailand without a re-entry permit to keep your extension valid

I didn't make the rules either.

When I bought a new truck, I just drove it where I wanted, and when I wanted, I do not agree with this law, so I did not obey it, and

was prepared to take my punishment if caught.

and no, I do not consider myself as a "guest" in this country like some other misguided people, Mikebells post is only one of many reasons why.

To answer your first point. Why should I have to pay for a rentry permit that I don't need?

The second, irrelevant to the original topic, you don't need red plates, just don't drive at night or out of your province. And the reason why getting the White plates takes so much time is that the dealer can't get them until they pay the tax and the dealers want to keep your money as long as they can, it's possible to get them quickly if you care to insist.
