as anyone in korat had a car cam fitted recently, there was a co.that put out flyers not long ago,but it went in the bin with most of them.

i would rather get one locally than buy one on line.

I have had one fitted which is a new interior mirror that clips over the old mirror. The camera is a small lens on the front of the mirror so it doesn't look like a camera at all and there is also a rear camera fitted on the back of the car so it records front and rear at all times. Also when you choose reverse gear the screen in the mirror glass shows the rear view for you to reverse safely. I used to have one of the cheap cameras that stick on the windscreen but this is so much better and although it is a bit more money, you certainly get what you pay for. I have seen them on Lazada for about 1900 baht but I had mine fitted professionally for 3 thousand all in. (all trim taken off and wires hidden up to the roof and to the rear of car etc.)

Be careful spending too much on one, since they all, in my experience have a definite lifetime, I think due to the heat, and after a while they fry themselves, well they are stuck right next the windshield in blazing sun for most of their life!

I've had 3 up to now, all between 800-1500฿. I can't say I noticed any real difference in performance at any price, but a worthwhile thing to have for sure

thanks GB2 i dont do a lot of driving in almost 4yrs.there's only 3,800 on the clock and it is covered when not in use.

i will have to drive in instead of reversing, that aint a problem i live on a moobanend house in the corner.

GB2 I agree about the cams that stick on the screen being affected by the heat as often they simply come unstuck and fall onto the dash.....but....the cam that I described above fits on top of the rear view mirror which more often than not is fitted at least six inches behind the screen and is away from the sun, much better. They are guaranteed for one year and to be truthful I did have one pack up but I took it back and they immediately changed it for a new one.

I don't care where you stick your dash cam - park that car out in the sun and it will be baking within minutes. We keep our car in a car port and it is still blasted hot.

P.S. I had a separate GPS unit mounted on the windshield in a previous car for several years, and yes, every now and then it would come unstuck, but I had no other problems with it. It seemed to survive the heat just fine. I suspect engineers analyze the heat issue when offering a product that sticks on the wind shield.

In UAE for the time being. 40+ degrees all summer long. Garmin GPS with camera stuck on my windshield no problem with heat, no problem with GPS. You get what you pay for with cheap cameras.

It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things so carry on with what you are happy with my friends, but I still prefer the one that fits over the mirror and records front and back.

Is there a way of switching the camera off to hide one's movements? I am not saying there are places that I don't want the wife to know I visit (like pool halls) - I am just curious.

Mine has an on/off switch, or I could just unplug it from the power source on my dash, if that is what you are asking.

Or you can simply leave the camera on but just stop it recording by pushing one button. Remember it's only a camcorder same as one you hold in your hand....you control the buttons and it does what you ask.

Of course if you are going to switch it on and off then the chances are you are going to have your accident when it's off so why bother with it at all?

I have mine in my phone, put the phone in the cradle, it uses the phones camera, so is never left there to "cook".

GPS/Maps/Dashcam/phone, all-in-one smile.png no need for separate devices.

Dont understand why anyone would want to turn it off. I like mine as it along with GPs starts and stops when I do same to vehicle. Makes it a no brainer.

As far as the comment about using a phone, sure a phone can make a video but can it:

Record the date and continuous driving time?

Record the exact location lat/long as you are driving?

Record speed?

Turn on and off with ease meaning no user input?

It cant do all that and thats where an all in one quality GPS unit comes out the winner.

There is a need for separate devices.

I agree. I see no need to ever shut mine off. It is there, recording away from the moment I start my car.

A fancier model that I find appealing also begins recording automatically even with the car off in the event that someone hits the car while it is parked. I will be looking to upgrade if and when my current model dies.

I guess it all depends on why you want the unit in the first place.....if you want to record all that info then you will need your gps unit, but what on earth do you want all that for? I imagine the majority of people want it just in case they have an accident or incident and then can prove fault etc. which just actually needs one minute of recording to show who's at fault. My unit records the time etc but every so often I simply format it so that I know it has enough memory to record my journey at any given time, I have yet to view anything on it, because I have had no need.

I actually quite like the idea of the smart phone and have actually now downloaded the app so maybe I will use it if driving in a car other than my own, but I won't change my mirror units.

A picture is worth a thousand words....

A phone is great for what it is.

An all in one GPS unit is great for what it is.

A phone cannot perform as a full up GPS unit.

A GPS unit cannot perform as a phone.

This is the difference. Its up to individual users what they want.

From your list, the only aspect it doesnt have is the "continuous driving time", (although if you happen to have engaged the GPS map/guidance too, then it will give time and distance since start and predicted arrival time)

Date/time/precise GPS location/speed and is one touch on/off

Personal choice as with many things.

Im from the "show me state" take a couple snapshots.

Lets see so does it record all this on the video?

Its a phone being rednecked to use as a GPS unit.

No problem...plenty of these available, note the date/time and GPS coordinates across the top left of screen.

The app is available from google-play and the main company is here: http://www.sygic.com/

You can also have an HUD added ("heads-up display" for night time driving if you like "toys")smile.png

Thanks for that CH. I might just have to get that for my phone for a backup system.

The brand we bought is an Advanced Portable Car Camcorder for 1790 baht. You would need to buy a second one to mount in the back if you wish to record in that direction.
