CHIANG MAI: -- A Chiang Mai soldier was so furious about having to pay 79 baht for a pork fried rice with an egg on top that he went to report the matter to the police.

Instead of paying the bill the senior military man took the bill and the money to the Chang Pheuak station and asked officers to call in the shop owner to explain why it was so much, reported Sanook.

Chanachai Saenkham from the Kawila Camp was out with some recruits at the Suan Luang Lanna park when he ordered the food.

"It was just ordinary fried rice," he said. "If it had been 50 that would be expensive. But 79 baht was too much."

He turned up at the station with the money as he didn't want anyone to think he was eating without paying the bill. The owner of the shop was called but a serving boy turned up with someone else and pointed at the soldier. They were invited to talk about the matter but Chanachai clammed up and departed in a huff getting on the military transport with his subordinates that was parked outside the station.

He went back to the camp where he pursued the matter by contacting the local authority to ask them to investigate why a plate of fried rice cost so much.

He should be dragged back to the station and made to kiss ass like jack brown was in Phuket.this man has just brought shame on the image of Thailand over 79 baht.lucky he's not a farang it would of been 179 baht.

Hell hath no fury like military man scorned.

Loss of face because he was with recruits who would probably have had to pay anyway.

Senior military man, good salary.

Problem was he was expecting to get a free meal, but did not happen.

He went to the police, what a prick, thinks he is better than others because of his rank.

Charge him for leaving without paying, jumped up little ....

If it cost nothing to buy and make, why don't you make it your self?

Stopped at a Thai restaurant one time, looked at the menu, ordered Chicken & Rice, 40 baht, and iced coffee, 35 baht. So, 75 baht total. When they brought me the bill it was for 150 baht. I grabbed the menu and pointed out the prices, and she replied, in good English - "Oh, that's the prices for Thai. Farang pay more." I told her I wasn't a damn stupid tourist, and slapped both Thai drivers license down on the table. Then took out exactly 75 baht, put it on the table, picked up my license and walked out. She didn't say a word. And I never went back there again.

I wouldn't even bother justifying myself.

The menu has prices. Pay them. Leave.

He would really been upset if he had to pay the falang price.

Out here in rural Khampaeng Phet I do pay the farang price. Strangely enough it is the same price that Thais pay.

Just goes to show that some soldiers live in a dream world in Thailand. The look of resignation on the coppers face says it all.

At this stage it's not clear whether the food was paid for.

If not, Captain Chanachai should be ordered back to the restaurant to pay his bill, or be charged for doing a runner.

What a dumb statement! Someone standing up for the right thing and you have a statement like that. Hope when you get screwed nexttime you say I am a farang I can afford a300% pricing and I am aware I desrve it for teh fact I make money.

If you want capitalism then pay up At the end of the day you can charge what you want and if people do not like it then they will not come to your establishment. Simple.

Stop belly aching about it Just don't eat there again There is nothing criminal about the price Just very expensive so go some place else If a lot of people do that then he is out of business

Yours is the dumb statement. If the menu says 79baht then that is what he should pay - irrespective of what it costs to make. If he went to an upmarket restaurant it would have cost him more than that. facepalm.gif

Correct. If the menu has prices, that's what you pay.

No point in bitching about it afterwards.

That's what Tripadvisor is for.

If they have the price displayed whatever it is you have the choice to pay or not eat there. All these complaints that you paid more than that in such and such a place is ridiculous. If they didnt show the prices then you should have moved on and if they did have the prices listed you knew the cost before you ordered.

Wait 'till this guy goes to Phuket and takes a 1 km taxi ride ! There will be some blood !

But the guy is right , 79 B voor fried rice is ridiculous.

He should see the price of Thai food inside the airport, and I am talking about the plastic

chair places not the proper sit down western standard places. And know the price is not

well displayed. bah.gif

Do you mean downstairs near the taxi ranks?

Well, Yingluck's idea of increasing from B200 to B300 was a disastrous idea but a perfect populistic election promise - being paid by the private industry. Now they are talking from B300 to B360; the fried rice is inching its way to the B100 barrier anytime soon.

Pathetic stupidity at its best; but nice that Thais are screwing Thais for a change giggle.gif
