UN appoints first expert on LGBT violence and discrimination

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The Human Rights Council has appointed international human rights expert Vitit Muntarbhorn of Thailand as the first U.N. independent expert charged with investigating violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

John Fisher, Geneva director of Human Rights Watch, said his appointment on Friday "made history" and "will bring much-needed attention to human rights violations against LGBT people in all regions of the world."

Muntarbhorn, a law professor, has been on the council's Commission of Inquiry on Syria and previously served as U.N. special investigator on North Korea and on child prostitution and child pornography.

He co-chaired a meeting of experts that adopted the Yogyakarta Principles on the application of international human rights law in relation to violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Sadly hate is not restricted to any one religion.

Murdering homosexuals in modern times is lot more prevalent when it comes to Islam than other religions. Name calling pales in comparison to that.

True, unfortunately, although I understood that in the case you cited, the perpetrator was a known regular on the gay scene. However that does not negate the facts on the ground. Still, there are signs of promise.

Who is this guy they've appointed? I've never heard him talk about human rights in Thailand during the last few years? Does he support (insert word here because I can't write it)? Was he put forward by the Thai regime? The LGBT cause is important but there are also even worse things going on in terms of human rights abuses in his home nation. Amnesty Int'l was blocked from speaking in his home nation. What was his comment on that? We need to know.

I would not expect a person in a position such as this to be responsible for the laws in his home country.   A Thai national is probably well placed for this position.   It is a rather tolerant nation and gays are acknowledged.   The laws are repressive, but the attitude is less so.

He is well placed to be able to see the difficulties from all sides.   He also may be able to make some inroads into the laws in Thailand.

Just bureaucracy in action. Appointing an expert to investigate doesn't actually do or achieve anything ( aside from expanding the bureaucracy and its budget of course), however it is seen to be doing such. It isn't the reality that matters as so few actually conceive that, it is the facade of action without action, later they can then point to their achievements of non-achivement. Job well done.
