BANGKOK: -- An explosion believed to have been caused by a cooking gas leakage at a steak shop in Rayong injured six people, three of them seriously, on Friday morning.

Police said the explosion occurred at a three-storey shophouse in Tambon None Phra in Rayong’s Mueang district at 9.10 am.

Three male Cambodian workers suffered severe burns as they cooked in the shop’s basement kitchen. The injured also included shop customers.

Shop owner Papatchaya Thirapaspipat, 45, said the explosion occurred when one worker turned on a microwave oven. She said the explosion might be caused by leakage from the cooking gas cylinder.

The whole kitchen room was damaged and the impact caused the concrete wall at the back of the shop to be hurled three metres.

Authorities sealed off the building pending a structural safety check.

Forensic science police have yet to confirm the cause of the explosion.

I live in Rayong and tgf was showing me pictures yesterday. She said it was a bomb. Well I guess a gas cylinder is bomb too. Really did some damage. Sorry for those hurt.

Very much doubt it was the gas cylinder leaking. More likely the hose connections, which are usually maintained to the same high standards as the electricity supplies here.

Looks like well done ?

Whichever, it's still some mis-steak, I think!

On a serious note, though, I have long wondered just how safe these gas cylinders are, especially since there is one of them standing right next door to my room in our kitchen. Needless to say this particular incident doesn't provide me with much reassurance on this point.

Thats why gas cookers are banned in condos. We have electric inside the kitchen and gas in an outside area. My wife said she preferred cooking with gas but has now changed her mind to cooking with the ceramic hob.

Cooking gas is more heavy than the atmospheric air so when having the gas canister in the cellar, the gas cannot escape if there is a leak and a spark is all there needs to ignite it.
