Cataract surgery required.

Featured Replies

Just been for an eye check-up at Bkk/Pattaya hospital because one eye was getting blurry. As I suspected I need a cataract operation, but fortunately it's only one eye, so cost will be 68,000 baht, that's for a mono lens. I'm a bit nervous about an op on my eye as I believe it can be uncomfortable but not painful. Any tips/experiences?

Price is about normal for upmarket facility - cost wife and I about 35k in Vejthani several years ago (which is a bit cheaper range).  Really nothing to fear as you show up several hours early to start dilation of eye with eye drops every 30 minutes or so and can do what you want, eat lunch or whatever.  Time for operation (in hospital) will be normal strip to hospital gown and ride to OR.  Head and equipment will be positioned and believe cleaning/numbing solution used and then doctor will break old lens/remove through small slip and insert/position new lens and eye will be covered until next day when bandage removed and checked and eye drop routine explained and procedure to cover eye at night to avoid any scratching.  During position of new lens it may be uncomfortable (was for one of mine) but in general not much - just try to position eyes as told when doctor working.

Prior to operation you will need measurements made of size of current lens using special test equipment (which may be additional cost) however.

Spose this is going to worry you, but only if you've had major facial surgery around the eye sinus region. My experience wasn't good, but got over it and all great now. That was one eye, but the next eye no problems at all.

Go to the queen Sirikit hospital in Satahip , its the navel one , register and see the eye doctor , its not as quick to be seen , but you get the same docs that work at the major hospitals ,its a third of the price ,same care , been going for years , re glaucoma (i get drops) and soon to have my cataract done , have spoken to lots of people who had it done there no problems

ps you must take a Thai speaker ,although nearly everyone i have seen speak english

My wife had both her eyes done a couple of years ago. It was really fantastic to see her reaction after removing the patch a day or two after the operation. It was like turning a light on for her. It was amazing. She had the second eye done 6 weeks later, you will not need to worry as you only have one to do.

Pls let us know when you do that and how it goes.

Don't go for mono-focal, spend the extra money and get the multi-focal.

Op was totally painless.

I had the same problem in one eye, but, got both eyes done. Best money I've ever spent.
