Thai's always seeing the doctor

Featured Replies

Why is it that anytime I "catch a cold", whether in Thailand, Europe, or the USA, after only 1 day my Thai friends or gf, who live in Thailand are telling me countless times that I should go to see a doctor? If it's worse than a cold, I agree, but something that heals on its own within a few days, a doctor will not be able to help, other than maybe prescribe some pills which I can either buy myself or don't do anything but lessen a cold by maybe a day. But seriously, why do Thai's in Thailand, always believe in seeing the doctor for the slightest change in how the body feels, as if the doctor is a miracle worker? My Thai freinds in the USA or Europe do not prescribe to the same notions.

Could it be that sick ATMs don't pay out?

Wifey is the same, she can be half dead but a suggestion that she visit the quack (she gets free treatment) is met with disdain, if I get a splinter it's "you need to go to doctor".

Love her to bits of course.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Yeah it's crazy.

We go all out to help the family members in our compound.
A few weeks ago 200 km round trip to get a good diagnosis for a teenager of asthma.
Didn't follow advice, didn't use spray, etc, etc, so 1 day later back to the local gp. Another x ray, more antibiotics.
2 days later back to a quak for injections.
We give up.

It is cultural. The same as when they are dining at home or in the noodle shop, they will ask a friend, neighbor, visitor or passing acquaintance to join them.

They don't really give a toss if you go see a doctor or not. Just short circuits the farang whining and any further discussion.

I remember last year when I needed a tooth pulled due to a failed root canal, the first thing my Thai coworker said was "OMG you need to check into the hospital". I said I would get the tooth pulled after school, she was mortified that I would go to a simple dental clinic for such 'major' surgery. They love the hospitals, my GF had a tiny bit of contact dermatitis due to some new vinyl furniture....right away to the hospital to get a handful of pills instead of using a bit of calamine lotion which I did to ease the itch.
