dear god,      just received an email from thai embassy to state that my thai wife must go to london to apply in person for a new renewed thai passport.

wife is in belfast ,    i asked embassy if she can make  a postal submission application but again they reply simply stating she needs appointment at thai embassy -london

question .....

1. is there a postal application route possible ?

2. even an agent ?

3. could she apply to thai consulate in dublin eire ?

4. could she send passport to bangkok for a postal application ?

5. could i (  her husband )   make the application for her ?

thankyou in advance

A Thai passport has to applied for in person because they do the photo for it digitally. It has been that way for many years now.

Passports can only be applied for at the embassy in London. The consulates in the UK and Ireland are honorary consulates and can only issue visas.

Occasionally they do mobile consular visits where passports can be applied for. Not sure if they do them in Belfast.

Does your wife need a valid passport to remain in the UK or to leave the country? A Thai can enter Thailand on an expired passport.

thanks joe

but my wifes passport expires  september 2017 ( next month )

i wanted to book her to see family in december 2017.

the airline ( etihad )   will allow her to fly on an expired passport ?

As Joe says your wife can enter Thailand on an expired passport, so Etihad should allow her to travel, whether they will or not is another matter, if l were in you're position I'd call them.

A passport is little more than an identity document which also proves your entitlement to enter your own country unhindered, that entitlement doesn't expire when the passport does.

Your wife might encounter questioning when checking in for her flight and maybe at the transit airport, but there again I might be doing Etihad staff an injustice.

Absolutely not and rightly so. She "may" well be able to enter thailand on an expired passport but not a chance in hell will you persuade Etihad check in to fly her. Ridiculous....

@pumpjack -  What is your wife's status in the UK?

Joe asked if she needed a valid passport to remain in the UK, I don't know for sure but I believe her Immigration Status might dictate the answer.

My daughter flew to Thailand earlier this year with BA using her expired Thai passport, no problem.

 It doesn't really matter, og.

If she has a visa or leave to remain vignette in her old passport, this is still valid even though the passport has expired. Although UKVI encourage people to transfer the vignette to the new passport or obtain a BRP if relevant, so they can collect the exorbitant fee; there is no legal requirement to so do. From Transfer your visa from your passport

Quote

1. Overview

You can still use your visa even if your passport’s expired, but you can choose to replace it with a biometric residence permit (BRP) if you’re in the UK.

You must replace your visa with a BRP if your name or personal details change.

If your passport has expired

You can still use the valid visa in your expired passport, but you’ll need to show your expired passport and your new passport when you’re travelling to and from the UK.

If pumpjack's wife moved to the UK after BRPs replaced LTR vignettes and so does have one then that is, of course, still valid until it's expiry date regardless of whether or not she has a valid passport.

Though, of course, when she leaves the UK she will need a valid passport as well in order to re-enter.

Thats appalling then simple as. Nobody but nobody should be travelling on expired passports in this day and age let alone a major airline condoning it......tell you what we'll get rid of scanners as well in the interim lets make it even easier

Dont care who they are lol, you're telling me in this age of upmost security that people are flying on major carriers on expired passports !  "Experts" dont encourage people to try and fly on expired passports and any third party reading the conversation would likewise be horrified this it could be suggested.

The thread is about a citizen returning to their home country on an expired passport.  A quick Google search will show you that is possible.

Chivas, not the first time you simply wont accept that you are wrong.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh on you, as it is obvious that you do not know why airlines check the passports of passengers checking in for international flights.

International agreements mean that an airline can be fined a substantial amount, up to 15,000 USD if memory serves, if they knowingly carry a passenger who does not have the correct entry clearance for their destination.

This is why they check passports of international passengers.

As repeatedly stated, Thai nationals can enter Thailand using an expired Thai passport; so the airlines don't, or shouldn't, have a problem with this.

Of course, all passengers have to pass through the required security checks.

As I've said before a passport is a means of proving that you're a citizen of a particular country, and thus entitled to enter without restriction, whilst a passport may have expired the information it contains doesn't.

UPDATE !!

chivas is wrong.

i just called ETIHAD today and they confirm that a THAI  national flying to home country ( thailand )  with an expired thai passport is allowed to board with no restrictions.

i asked for it in writing but was told they do not email customers, however she assured me that the data she was looking at is the same data which checkin staff use,  so no problems whatsover

Thanks for the update.  It's good to know that our resident experts are usually right!

Well Thais in the UK don't need to do a 90 day report so she can renew her passport when she returns . also doubt the Uk will fine you or  blacklist you as they do to us.

They used to have mobile teams travelling to various large UK cities, and to Dublin as there is no Thai

As said by ubonjoe, Thai citizens can enter Thailand on an expired passport. So, unless she needs her passport before her next trip to Thailand, I suggest waiting until then and renewing it there. Again, she'll have to do so in person.

I understand entering Thailand on an expired passport, but on the originating end, will they check you in on an expired passport?

Nobody was encouraging, they just said it was possible. You jumped to a false conclusion, made an erroneous statement and now in order to justify yourself are digging a deeper hole. Move on.
