Rooney retires from International football

Featured Replies

Wayne Rooney,Englands record goalscorer has today announced his retirement from International football despite being recalled into the squad by Gareth Southgate.

i'm not a football fan but rooney never seemed to be able to perform well at the highest level. sure he scored a lot of goals but how many were against high quality opposition? maybe he took a hint and jumped before he was pushed?

I'm guessing if he scored a lot of goals, he performed well?

If idiot Southgate hadn't have dropped him in the first place, this situation would not have arisen. Rooney is only 31 and could have easily played in 2 more major tourneys (I know he said he was retiring after 2018 WC).

England's loss is Everton's gain.

The writing has been on the wall ever since he was dropped by Southgate in the first place, I think.

What a coincidence. He times his announcement after being offered a recall. Sounds like spoilt kid syndrome.

No real loss nowadays. He would of warmed the bench at best.

Yeah, he should have announced it earlier.

I can't remember the full rules/laws on International duty but isn't there something about not being able to refuse a call up? I think if you do and your country wish to take it further, you could get a 3 match ban at your club. Might be totally off base there but I'm sure I remember something similar happening to Makalee at Chelsea

The scurge of the Faroe Islands has retired.   Did he ever perform well in a tournament against top notch opposition when it mattered.......

Not fit to clean Greaves' boots.

"but rooney never seemed to be able to perform well at the highest level."

England national team top scorer all time

2nd in Premier League top scorers
Alan Shearer. 260.
Wayne Rooney Everton. 200.
Andrew Cole. 187.

He was a very decent player and still has a lot to offer
