Video: Was 22 year old American car thief really sleeping?

Thai media posed a question about the 22 year old thief caught on CCTV stealing a rental car.

"Was he sleeping or was it something else?", asked the presenter on Thai TV.

Jarren Goldston claimed after his arrest in Mae Rim, 30 kilometers from where he had driven the Honda City away, that he was sleepwalking.

He claimed that this often happened to him and he could not take responsibility for his actions.

Today video footage taken at 4am on Monday shows him staggering a little but seemingly in possession of his faculties as he peers in the car before driving off.

The key had mistakenly been left in the ignition by the rental company after cleaning on Sunday evening.

TNA reported that Goldston was handcuffed after he proved awkward and unwilling to talk to investigators demanding that he speak to his embassy.

He has been charged with theft in the hours of darkness after driving off in the car from near the Tha Pae gate in Chiang Mai.

Goldston had only been in Thailand three days and was due to be in the country until February.

Lets hope that the quality tourist from US will sleep tight in prison.. But I have my doubts, haha

That´s not a person sleepwalking. Do they really have to investigate that?

Bladdered !

I've been there before (although never stolen a vehicle, or anything else). :giggle:

Of course it is possible, this woman drove a car and rode a motorcycle whilst sleeping !
http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-42267790

But, doing something in your regular routine while asleep is quite feasible !!

This guy looks more like he’s under the influence of something rather than asleep !!

Just an opportunist thief IMO .

These cops must here some rather interesting stories.

1) I would like to know how far from his place did he leave the car, e.g. around the corner which would point to reason he stole his ride home, i.e. premeditated and what other forms of transport does he usually catch to get home when out at around the same time, i.e. a bus, a taxi.

2) Can he back up his claim via a specialist who he has been under the care of for his sleep walking and is he on any meds, other the the ones he is obviously high on ?

3) Where was he prior to stealing the car, e.g. sleep drinking at a bar no doubt

When he is found guilty of not sleep walking, toss him in the cells for 5 years, then deport him and blast list him from ever returning, even when he comes back sleep walking and tries that on the immigration officer at the airport, what a "looser"

Or he could be really sleepwalking. Doesn't walk straight and can't even open a car door at first attempt. Unless you have seen a person sleepwalk and therefore have the expertise to contrast it with his behaviour in this case.

Did they check his blood and urine for drugs?

In Thailand, CCTV is very performant, but not able yet to check blood or urine.

Actually there is a medical condition in which people do all kind of things in their sleeps, like driving a car etc. His defense is less crazy than it sounds.

"claimed after his arrest in Mae Rim, 30 kilometers from where he had driven the Honda City away,"

Can't walk straight and problems opening the door, but can drive (on Thai roads) 30 kilometers without problem apparently.

So, this will all be backed up by medical examiners reports from the USA I suppose

I'm thinking his sleep pattern is about to change.

Certainly sleeping bum to the wall for a while.

Looks like another tourist just founded out the cheap songtaews disappear at dark.  Probably could have got a ride from a ladyboy with a motorbike for 100 THB.  Lock him up!

He looks wide asleep to me

But I can hear him snoring!

An American judge might believe his whiny and self-serving nonsense. "I can't help it ... I didn't mean to be bad .... I have a medical condition .... I'm a precious snowflake ..... I'm a good person really!"

But this ain't the USA. Enjoy your daily naps in your prison cell.

Not only the US....

Looking at the video several times , he  does look like someone sleep walking , just watch other videos on youtube documenting this phenomenon.

The brain works in different ways, and for a normal person it would seem weird for someone to stand up and walk out of bed .

But my question is how far was it to the rental place from his house? Was it just a few feet away and he just happened to walk into the rental place?  In the video you can clearly see he does not seem to focus on what he's doing , I agree it also looks like he could be on drugs. But he just see a car and open the left door , not the right door that would be normal if your intentions are to steal the car. The wheel is on the right side in Thailand and he could be dreaming he was opening the door to his own car back in the US .

Not saying it happened but it could be one of those weird cases.  I am sure his doctor back in the US could verify if he is a sleep walker , because surely this is not the first time .

How someone can be stupid enough to let the key in the ignition at night????

Do you need to be on drug to steal a car??

I think the US Embassy under trump will vouch for his symptoms if he is a white boy and will turn him down if he was a Latino or Afromican????

Not quite as stupid as someone who claims sleep-walking takes away his responsibility fro car theft.
