Police have said that a Chiang Mai lawyer has been involved in transporting drugs to the south of Thailand for the last four years.

Ekkarat Pitakprai, 29, is still at large but is believed to be behind an 860 kilogram "ice" bust made on Tuesday.

His close female friend and fellow lawyer Chayada Chaiwenkhwaen was caught in Chiang Rai driving the refrigerated pick-up carrying the crystal meth.

Yesterday deputy chief of Region 5 police Panudech Bunreuang armed with a search warrant went to one of Ekkarat's properties in San Sai Noi sub-district of San Sai.

Relatives had got wise to the raid and removed much property but cops still confiscated bank books showing 3 million baht, a car, three guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, gold and silver. The house and another property were seized.

The value of all of that came to 15 million baht.

Police also seized a car, bank books, cash and gold from the address of Chayada in Muang district of Chiang Mai. All the property was obtained with drug money, said the cops.

Deputy chief Panudech said that it was clear from bank records that Ekkarat had been involved in the drug trade for the last four years.

Deposits totally a million baht or more were made regularly.

Ekkarat, who was operating his lawyer's practice out of the first house seized, is being hunted by police.

He's probably well out of Thailand now, leaving her to carry the can.

I suppose this is one case where 'he should have seen it coming' is most apt, it seems that all arms of the law in Thailand are up to no-good, he can't have been making his shake-down insurance payments, or just enough to get a tip off.

And the cops have known he was a drug dealer for 4 years.....and of course did nothing! Obviously, ran out of baksheesh!
