June 13, 20187 yr Chiang Rai pineapple farmers suffer price slump CHIANG RAI, 13th June 2018 (NNT) - Local authorities in the northern province of Chiang Rai have held a meeting with a group of pineapple farmers to address a price slump affecting their product. According to the farmers, the price of Pattawia pineapples has fallen to 80 satang per kilogram, well below the minimum 4 baht per kilogram needed to stay profitable. Currently, there are no local sales points to help reduce the oversupply of Pattawia pineapples in the region. The farmers are required to travel long distances to reach pineapple manufacturers, such as those in the eastern province of Rayong or the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan in the upper southern region. Some of the farmers have been forced to leave their pineapples to ripen and rot in the fields, as they were unable to make enough money to hire workers for harvesting. Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, has now instructed relevant authorities to seek cooperation from several local organizations to each buy 1,000 metric tons of Pattawia pineapples as a short-term solution. In the long term, the governor is promoting the use of pineapple in processed food products. -- nnt 2018-06-13
June 13, 20187 yr Cut your losses and dump a large proportion of your stock and watch the prices go up , oversupply from greed usually ends this way in all countries and eventually leads to dumping .
June 13, 20187 yr 3 minutes ago, Nong Khai Man said: Just bought 6 Kgs in Nong Khai for 48 Baht ( 5 Pineapples ) Yes the middlemen are still making the money!!!
June 13, 20187 yr 10 minutes ago, jvs said: Yes the middlemen are still making the money!!! Then if the farmers think they can do it better, they should cut out the middlemen. If they can't then should not mention it.
June 13, 20187 yr Popular Post Everybody went huge into pineapples in the last few years because the price was so good. This is the problem with following the crowd.
June 14, 20187 yr Just back from Chiang Rai. At one of the temples - the Big White Bhudda, I don't remember its name - there are mountains of good quality pineapples, both ripe and unripe, free to take away, as many as you want. The sponsor of the temple is paying ß1 per kg to the farmers and giving them away free to all comers. Philanthropy.
June 14, 20187 yr I see it's going to be a bumper year for cheap pineapple shakes at our house. Just wondering out loud, but why can't pineapples be use for making ethanol? And why don't farmers hang out a sign: Pick-Your-Own pineapples: 2 THB / kilogram
June 14, 20187 yr Popular Post In the far north there is a glut of mango, orange or pineapple depending on the growing seasons. What appears to be missing is the organization whereby factories are locally built to dry or can these seasonal fruits for export. The growers have little time before these products perish and are worthless and often accept prices that are abysmally low. Getting them to a local factory where they could be turned into juice, sliced fruit or dried packs seems the obvious thing to do but doesn't happen. Govt doesn't want to help farmers so maybe they need to form cooperatives and help themselves but without huge funds it cant be done.
June 14, 20187 yr Today's price in Sattahip road 331, 35kg for 100 Baht. Skickat från min Mi A1 via Tapatalk
June 15, 20187 yr You have hit the point right on the head Lungstib. Some sort of coop would be of great benefit to the farmers up here in CR. In all types of farming. The farmers have the very same problems with rice buying middle ment which small villages can't do with out but pay the cost dearly. Keeping it all subsistence farming . I know the topic is pineapples but the lack of infrastructure to the poorest of the poor farmers would go a long way. A graining buying coop. and juice or dehydrating facility for pineapples and mangoes. but they will never be able to do it on there own Very sad to see and frustrating to see such hard work pay off so little and and time not even break even. I know as well they are not totally innocent of making there own problems with piling one but it's the uneducated that usually are the last in on these "Good ideas"
