BANGKOK, 14th June 2018 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has reported that flood counter measures, such as dredging canals and installing water pumps, are 70% complete.

BMA Deputy Permanent Secretary Somphong Wiengkaew today chaired a meeting on the city’s preparations for the rainy season. The meeting heard that the BMA’s flood prevention plan has progressed by 70% and is expected to be finished by July this year.

A key measure in the plan is dredging canals, and clearing drainage pipes to enhance drainage capacity. Officials estimate that Bangkok has over 6,400 kilometers of canals, and the BMA has dredged 70% of them at a rate of three kilometers per year.

Authorities are also monitoring 53 flood-prone areas throughout the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. A total of 190 water pumps have been deployed in these areas, with another 100 pumps in reserve. The BMA is also preparing to deploy water thrusters along Prem Prachakorn Canal and Ladphrao Canal to increase the rate of drainage into the Chao Phraya River.

They will have to increase the dredging rate to 49,920 km/year to finish the 1920 km remaining in the next 2 weeks,  Typical Thai math!  Better employ more equipment!

Flood counter measures in BKK are ensuring there's a good, no receipt slush fund available, those in charge are to be trained in using this fund for their own use and to not be caught.

Other than that....new new "drainage" tunnel is pretty much a failure.....akin to pushing s*** uphill......and BKK will continue to flood as it always has done!

Redirect the floodwater to other provinces, job done.

Years ago I was invited to join a press tour about the subject. One of the high ranking officials in charge of releasing water from a dam told me secretly. "If we release water all provincial governors down the stream order closing of their sluices to protect their assets and those of big local farms and companies."

Attention please: All gov. officials are ordered to move their entire office equipment to the third floor, and employ rubber dinghies shuttle services for a save journey home after work!

Finally a usage for officials in inactive posts.

Every year these "plans" come out and every year there is massive flooding across the country. Maybe the concepts are just too fanciful compared with reality.

A fresh look is required for water management in general which is something that never seems to get considered

3 km canal dredging per year.

Either it's a ridiculous statement or a translation error

Anyway, I guess the flood prevention measures are as good as the years before.
Which means NULL

At that rate it's going to take them 2,133 years to finish.

With 70% complete they've been working for 1,493 years until now.

not 2,133 years mate

2,133 hours

Even at 300 km/year, it would take 21 years and, more than 2 years at 3000 km/yr.
