However, the Merlin engine has appeared a number of times in this thread, and we seem to all be aficionados of well crafted machinery, merging form and function to the highest level, and the Spitfire is arguably the culmination of that goal.

Not a well known fact but the early Spit' was rejected by the Air Ministry for not meeting the requirements laid out in the tender so RJ Mitchell and team went back to redesign aspects of it calling on their experience in racing seaplanes at the Schneider Trophy early 30's .. The prototype Merlin engine was also made available about 1935 which transformed the Spit' allowing it to meet the requirements laid down by the Air Ministry .. After seeing this prototype an initial contract was granted to Mitchell's team to develop the plane further .. The rest they say is history though Mitchell wouldn't live to witness his plane achieve national greatness dying aged 42 in 1937 ..

Over 24 variants from fighter , fighter-bomber , interceptor , night-fighter , aerial reconnaissance , and towards end of WW2 escorting bombers pounding Germany .. not to mention the carrier based Seafire .. Originally fitted with numerous incarnations of the Merlin the later ones came with the new even more powerful 37 litre RR Griffon engine ..

The Spitfire was not the only plane transformed by the Merlin the NAA ( North American Aviation ) P51 was also transformed by its rate of climb and high altitude performance to the point where the 51's original engine the Allison 1710 V12 was dropped and Merlin's built under license by Packard were installed instead .. P51 went on to become the fastest and one of the most heavily armed piston engined fighters of the war and fitted with drop tanks could easily escort the bombers to Germany , do battle with any interceptors whilst the bombers did their work and then escort them back ..

The incomparable Merlin ..

Allison 1710 that the Merlin replaced .. note lack of supercharger ..

Numerous variants of Spitfire in formation ..

The beautiful P51 ..

I tried to buy the 7.62 GE M134 "Deer Defender" system for my 955i Tiger, but Amazon won't ship it to Thailand.  Maybe someone can hand carry me one from the US?

Well if you can get the Import permit, I can do the export.  I think there is one for sale in Utah at $375,000 US, plus shipping and the transfer fees. Its doable.

I have plenty of import permits.  They're purple and white, with a picture of the king on one side.  It's got to include the full Tiger mounting kit though, complete with remote firing button to place just beside the horn.  (I find that it doesn't really matter if I go for the horn and press the wrong one by mistake, as the offending vehicle soon gets out of my way.  In one way or another).

Keep in mind the M134 runs at a minimum of 2000 rounds per minute. At wholesale .40 a round for 7.62x51, that baby be burning $13 a second. Increase the CRF to 4000 rounds per minute and you do the math. Good luck on finding cheap 7.62 also.

Ahh, but when I come up behind you and you see that in your rear view mirror, you've got to ask yourself "does he have any bullets left?"  Are you feeling lucky, punk?

Last one from I on the planes ..

Another Brit' plane that made the most of the Merlin engine was the Mosquito .. Just about every aeronautical role was filled by this plane right up to being fitted with a 57 mm anti-tank gun in the nose to hunt U-boats .. On the 10th anniversary of the Nazis coming to power golden goose Goering , head of the Luftwaffe was due to give a nationwide speech glorifying the regime until some Mosquito's turned up and shot the **** outta the building the broadcast was to come from .. It also took part in the Amiens jail break where Mosquito's precision bombed the walls of a prison holding prisoners due to be executed allowing many to escape their fate .. After WW2 concluded civilian versions were used as continental airmail deliverers such was its speed ..

If planes were bikes the Mosquito would be a twin engined dragbike ..

Quote below from Goering who loathed but also admired the Mozz' in equal measure ..

You'd want the M134D-H model made by Dillon Aero, as it's much improved.  A friend designed an urban combat vehicle. I called Dillon awhile back to see if we could borrow one for a demo.  The sales guy wasn't very helpful.

I get the operating principle of the concept and it has been tried by other engine makers but I ain't sure about it being of much benefit on a bike ..

Ossa Yankee 500 LC lump .. Trying to find the bike it was fitted in ..

Ossa comp' bike not sure but tagged a 350cc ..

Bimota's stillborn 500 stroker from 90's .. They really went for it with this designed from ground up with Fi but that isn't an easy nut to crack on 2 strokes , all the big players have tried to conquer it but none have ever felt it was up to production motorcycle req's so for a small numbers player like Bim' to go with taking an Fi stroker to market was a brave move .. That didn't work .. nor did the bike very well .. I've spared ye'z the full bike as its all bodywork but the 'zorsts look cool ..
