Your words matey.how do you do voluntary work for money or recognition.ive now smoked my brains out thinking about volunteering for work with pay.

He doesn't do the work for (1) money or (2) recognition ... he doesn't get paid and he seems a modest chap. I think most people understood the point being made, that he volunteers his time ... keep smoking.

I thought that it was pretty decent of the Thai officials to do this. Robert Harper doesn't do the voluntary work for money or recognition, he does it because he's a decent human being and I suspect he enjoys the technical challenge posed ... we all salute you Mr Harper!

Let's hope the kids all get out safely and soon.

He should have been awarded a medal

Someone thankfully has realised that calling in foreign expertise ,achieving a positive result and publicly thanking them with Thai hospitality doesn’t make them lose face but endears the nation to the world. Worth any number of tourist encouraging initiatives.

There's a thought, and another one - why the tourism minister?

Further, still no visit or comment from the national police chief.

The tourism Minister is seeing the money in a tourist enterprise after this rescue, the police chief couldn't see any opportunities.

Have another think about it when you wake up!  And while you're at it, you could also consider the obscene amounts of money that some people get for being on the board of  Charities like Save The Children or Oxfam e.g.:-

"A total of eleven Oxfam executives including Mark Goldring were paid more than £100,000 in 2016/17 - up from five people in 2009/10."

and:-

"Save the Children International’s CEO Helle Thorning-Schmidt earned $257,358.75 USD in 2016".

and:-

" The medical charitable funder the Wellcome Trust awarded the highest salary, with its highest-earner paid between £3.05m and £3.06m."

These people work for charitable trusts, they are not volunteers, the divers in this case are volunteers.totally different ball game as in post 104.

You sound straight today! You are not wrong, but I still find it obscene that these people are getting such high salaries that in effect are lessening the amount of money that goes to the deserving causes they deem to represent. On topic, I have just heard that one of the Thai Navy Seals has drowned while participating in the planned evacuation - tragic, and it just shows how dangerous the conditions are.

Do you consider everyone who drinks to be an alcoholic?

Thanks, Sambum. All what was written was "drinks". It was ResandePohm who suggested they were alcohol. Just the other day I was offered an iced tea. It was accepted in the happy spirit in which it was offered. Sheesh!

I'm not understanding why they would pack him off so quickly, since he is 1 of only a handful of people that could cave dive those kids out.

I hope it's not a case of you found them, but we want the world to see a Thai bring them out.

Seems like the Thai don't know what to do now.

I am starting to think the very same things

It's gone very quiet lately, at least with the governor we had a lot of updates.

It does seem to be going a bit pear shaped now.

You really think the governor was updating here or in the media?

His transfer date was set since April, as you can see from another thread on this forum.

My two experiences of volunteering over the years here meant that I paid my airfare.

I contributed to the accommodation costs.

And some food as well.

And bought the beer...

No regrets..

Happy memories.

Were you also invited because you professed something only few people on this planet do, or did you just decided to have a holiday in Thailand and combine it with some volunteering?

Since you quoted that you bought the beer, I suspect the latter, because i doubt in this rescue any beer was involved.

The man volunteered, gave his  time to help others not as fortunate as many of us.he put his hand in his own pocket.so what if it wasn't cave diving rescuer, what he done and where he done it doesn't come into it.you perfectly fit the picture of a keyboard warrior.

Don't they need specialists like him now?

Didn't you read that he had to return home for a medical appointment? Unfortunately these days in the UK, if you miss an appointment with the NHS (presumably!) , it will be an awfully long time before you get another one!

Of course I don't think he was updating on thaivisa.

He was giving regular updates to the media and leading the operations.

And he was doing a good job.

Yes his transfer was planned since April. However midway through this tragedy makes it very difficult. They should someone else charge from the beginning.
