I don't think the ordinary Thai people need any lessons on respect, it's the ones in the fancy uniforms and have the fancy ranks who love their authority, and paid their way up the ladder.

I beg to differ. There's a quite common unwelcoming attitude towards falangs here in LOS.

Thais generally think they know better, and yet most of what constitutes their "modern life" comes from the west. Oh, and will we ever read that Thailand has sent help to some other country? Will we???

That's unfair. Countless berry pickers in Sweden wouldn't agree with your post.

This is a bit harsh, Thailands biggest problems are their government, and some aspects of the Immigration, not the ordinary people, if the two aforementioned would do their jobs properly, and use some common sense, and stop being so money motivated, I won't go into all the reasons, Thailand would be a great country.

Agree partly with both posts. There is definitely a sort of "dumb farang"attitude amongst a lot of the people and not just the Government and Immigration, but mainly the "Service Providers"

I have said before that the way to get a Thai to take your advice on a problem is to somehow make that advice out to be their idea in the first place!

Having said that, I know a lot of very friendly "ordinary" Thai people who are only too pleased to help if needed in certain circumstances, and often refuse to take money for their efforts e.g. a neighbour tuning my new Smart TV in when the instructions were all in Thai, (Dumb farang - I know!) the little garage round the corner that won't charge for small jobs - or even take a tip for the same. And it's not just because they know me - I've been given a lift on the back of a motor bike taxi before when I've not had the money to pay for it, just because he happened to be going my way.

Ha ha! People think that in the Middle East the women walk behind their husbands as a mark of respect for their superior lords and masters. Wrong - the answer is far more simple - "LAND MINES"!

I have had similar experiences also.

I hope the guy gets a knighthood from the Queen, if anybody deserves one he and his buddy do. Real heros, who do more than just kick a football about...they save lives at the risk of their own.

Good on you lads.

The man volunteered, gave his  time to help others not as fortunate as many of us.he put his hand in his own pocket.so what if it wasn't cave diving rescuer, what he done and where he done it doesn't come into it.you perfectly fit the picture of a keyboard warrior.

I have raised this point before and pending censure I will say it again.

Why shoot insinuous remarks just for the sake of it.?

Several higher level posters seem to revel in having a go at other forum members..

And openly get away with it.

I was introduced to several organizations when I was working in Thailand.

I was invited to contribute time to two.

Brother Ray's in Pattaya and Opportunity Foundation Thailand.

Dealing with victims of abuse, prostitution and trafficking.

I certainly don't regret the times I have put in.

Nor feel the need to defend my actions.

I have had a fortunate working life, and gained skills that I found needed by some charitable groups.

I was offering a general response to a post, regarding volunteering.

Without expectations of any remuneration.

Many regional places its seen as a nice thing to do, to buy the odd beer at the end of the day..?

Classy gent, leaving quietly. That's how charity work should be done. Looks to be quite humble and quiet. No wonder the Thais was so taken with him. He's made his colleagues at the South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team proud.
That's not how it should be done. We needed him to stay. He did a great job but there is so much more that needs to be done he would have been an inspiration even from the side lines

He probably had a good reason though. Big respect for him

Were you also invited because you professed something only few people on this planet do, or did you just decided to have a holiday in Thailand and combine it with some volunteering?

Since you quoted that you bought the beer, I suspect the latter, because i doubt in this rescue any beer was involved.

Some really sad and bitter minded people around.

You may not see that?

Or that you possibly fit the description?.

I was working here.

Ranger programme.

Many of my Thai reports were Buddhist and so do volunteering when they can.

Companies like Ford call it corporate citizenship.

Regards to professing to have unique skills?

No.

A desire to give back something. ?

Yes.

The needs were shown to me and i offered a little bit of my time to possibly make a small change to some people's lives.

No idea what relevant point is made regarding me buying a few bottles of Leo at the end of the day for the people who I was sharing accommodation with in northern Thailand,?

I loved every minute of it.

Made some friends for life.

Welcome back any time I have the chance to get there.

Familiar with farang ki nok.....?

I get the nicer explanation now.

Enough said....:)

Did you not read that he had to leave to keep a medical appointment?

"Harper, who is 70, left ahead of his two colleagues for a health checkup."

Of course we don't know what his medical reasons were/are, but I can guess that he needed to see his own doctors back in the UK.

Regarding your impression that he looked "angry" and "very upset" - well, that is the prerogitive of 70 year old men , I always look like that when I'm in an airport.

That works elsewhere as well.  Years ago in the US, I was an electronics repair tech for a time.  Company provided a few multi meters that were shared.  Always busted or burned out.  I made a suggestion to a co-owner that they could get some reasonably priced digital meters, one for each tech.  If they lasted 6 months, let them take them home.  Once that became his brilliant idea, it happened.  Out of 6 or 8 meters, all but one survived.  Got me a free meter!  (Didn't hurt that my Dad was one of the co-owners. 555)

My thoughts are that you are trolling!

He did not look "angry and upset" to me - in fact he looked a bit embarrassed at the attention.

And as far as a free check up here is concerned, maybe the doctor performing the check up might like to have the patient's notes to hand hmmm? And maybe have experience/knowledge of that particular patient's condition hmmm?

If course, this is only speculation on my part!
