You can't even ask a question without being vile "Chinaman."

Only used pejoratively in the US (of course). To Brits and Australians it also means a left arm off spin. Commonly heard in cricket commentary in all countries that play cricket.

So yes it's OK in Australia, Britain and many other countries.

Nice try though.

  • Blacks are not a protected species. The many caricatures of Trump and other white people passes unremarked. He drew her as an ugly black woman having a tantrum. That is exactly what she was.

  • Personally Ihink the cartoon was hilarious and was the caricature of what we saw on the court. Williams was a disgrace to her sport and tried to turn her defeat and tantrums in to a woman thing.

  • She turned and made the whole incident about women eqaulity and sexsime issu and branded the umpire as a lier and a thief, and this is exactly how she was depicted in the cartoon...

Now we have racist cartoons and racist photos and you don't have a clue do you?  That is what has been my contention.

Do you want to explain how the photo is racist? Is it somehow doctored to make her look like she's throwing a hissy fit or to make her hair frizzy and her face distorted, or is it a true depiction of what she really looked like? Try and answer honestly for once instead of introducing Jim Crow into your argument again, though I accept that's a big ask.

Perhaps we should admit that it was 'racist art' and that the Australian cartoonists are the scourge of the planet, so that marcusarelus can find some peace of mind.

Nah. Just ignore him and life will go on.

What is racist about the photo? How can a photo be racist? Are you denying that it was Serena?

The cartoonist took a copy of the photo and drew what he saw.

No wonder the leader of the world Trump says non white people are not human!?

Whites across history since they transferred from europe to north America, they sent all native Americans to God.  They transferred blacks from Africa to Britain and America, they transferred Jews to middle east.

She has won so often in her career that she is used to it, and when she loses she behaves in a way that should embarass a three year old.

Somebody then drew a cartoon of her misbehaving. A funny one at that.

Some people then remarked the cartoon was racist, when in reality it was simply an accurate and humorous depiction of what actually happened.

That is it, nothing more to see here.

From best selling British authors to sports pros to news organizations all over the world have been quoted in this thread is depicting the cartoon as racist just as the world was starting to forget about Australia's racist indiscretions in the recent past and the cartoon's newspaper's doubling down reaction only served to inflame the issue.  Sorry you don't know how to google.  What you do is open a new window and type in the search box Australia racist cartoon news.  Hope that helps.

That is the point I have been trying to make.  You just don't get how the rest of the world feels about odd spin on racism.

The cartoonist also said he had no idea of Jim Crow cartoons and denied they existed.  He is as clueless as the rest of you about what is and is not racist.  Because you all keep saying it's OK in Australia is meaningless.  I know it would never occur to you but if you google "example of racist photo" you will get the answer to your question.

Google "sports, culture and racism."  Or "how can a photo be racist?"  or "racism in sports in Australia"  I accept that it is a big ask.

It's "off spin" a cricket term. 555

There are people all over the world saying it is not racist too, but they don't tend to make the headlines as much because that position doesn't sell as many advertisment spaces.

This is not even an issue, hardly worth the time even to respond, it is a cartoon.

I think it would do serena williams good to look at this every time before she has a match so she does not act the same, ridiculous way she did.

I will tell you what, articulate in writing exactly what is racist about it and I will break it down. What EXACT parts of the depiction are racist?

I don't know who Jim Crow is and I don't care. Neither does the rest of the world. You still haven't said how the cartoon is racist. Or the photo.

Except, "Jim Crow says so, J.K. Rowling says so, bla bla bla"

The record's stuck, go back to sleep.

Right. The reason he/she is not stating how exactly the photo is racist is he knows the arguement will get torn to pieces in a second.

If you can't articulate your argument or position, you really don't have an argument. You just have meaningless words.

Serena you stuffed up... and it's all just a load of

squeak squeak squeak pwop waaaah (sound effects)

Who calls Australians honkeys?

If you know how to Google you will find that black African Americans use this term to refer to white people in general, not specifically Australians. How outrageous!! 555

It's supposedly a derogatory term for Caucasians.  Who cares?

While on the subject of racism why are blacks in the USA called African Americans? If they were born in the country aren't they just Americans? So isn't African American racist? In Australia we call our black people Australians.

Most thinking Aussies couldn't give a rat's what JKR thinks or any other high profile entertainer who thinks their opinion is superior for that matter. We are all entitled to our own opinion and beliefs and it's not up to you or them to be trying to convert others to your/their way of thinking. You can have your opinions just don't expect others to change theirs.

By the way, should your user name be spelt marcusarelius after the Roman emperor?

Still waiting for an explanation as to how the photo is racist. Of course there won't be one, you shot yourself in the foot again and there is no explanation.

Perhaps it might be interesting to find out what blacks call Australians in Australia as American blacks don't go there except to play sports or music (so an Aussie told me).

2nd time I have answered.  google "example of racist photo"  If you can't understand the results not my fault as the rest of the world does with the exception of some in Australia.

I think this is the third time I have answered the question, "What EXACT parts of the depiction are racist?"  The problem is that Australians can't understand the answer.  CNN can and the rest of the world but not Australians.  I don't know why.

The answer for the third time?

There's little doubt that Knight grossly exaggerated the nose and lips of Williams for the same reason he exaggerates the physical characteristics of most of his cartoons' subjects: They are caricatures, and, as such, he targets differences and explodes them. But he must have been aware of, and deliberately ignored, the historical echoes of his cartoon -- the exaggerated lips and nose reminiscent of racist depictions of black people in the United States during Jim Crow.

My thoughts exactly...……...the photo was taken at the time, no doctoring, no additions, no exaggerations so it is a true likeness of that person.

So a true likeness becomes racist???? I'd better take a look at some photos taken of me a few years back to see if I can accuse someone of racism...…...I'm sure there will be someone out there who can help!!!

What is the world coming to?

OMG he's woken up! Back to Jim Crow are we? Everyone's moved over to the other "Australians are racists" topic. Off you go!

Well they call us all sorts of names but water off a duck's back, who cares. The more polite ones call us whitey I believe. Many that I've worked with and talked to are very nice people. Unfortunately there are a lot who have the "entitlement syndrome so they feature more in criminal activities proportionate to whites.

Yes, American blacks come to play sport and music and some of them settle here it seems.  Who would have thought?  Black people wanting to stay in such a racist country!

Thank you for the pointer.

I managed to find many cartoons and even a Tom and Jerry cartoon in the Jim Crow Collection. I have to admit it was made some 80 years ago back in 1932.

Until you brought it up on here I also had never heard of it nor will I bother to look for any more buy there was one there from the National Geographic from 1906 and 1930.

Of course it is not your fault that we don't understand you bur IMHO the rest of the world doesn't either nor do they particularly care.

My apologies but I haven't yet had the time to complete a worldwide survey and ask everybody what they think. Did you, or are just assuming that as usual, you are right and everybody else is wrong?

Strange that nobody cared about the cartoon caricatures in MAD magazine. Fast forward years and everyone is a victim or fighting for victims on the big bad internet.

Fritz the Cat got banned in the UK back in the early seventies. I was lucky enough to see it before it got banned. Laughed all the way through it, but that wasn't just down to the movie...….

And I have done exactly as you suggested, and guess what, there are two hits for racist photos, one is of a black with a gorilla in a side by side pic, the other talks about the National Geographic, neither which have any relevance to the photo of Serena Williams, which could have been taken by any number of journalists or spectators, and shows her exactly as she behaved with no doctoring. So, once again you have shown yourself up to be both blinkered and biased. Persevere with this ridiculous "racist photo" argument and you only make yourself look even more silly.

That was back in the ancient times when people still had skin thicker that one micrometer.
