Though the song was written by Zevon it was first recorded in '72 by Murray McLauchlan, found on his debut Songs From The Street LP.

Zevon eventually recorded it himself on his '76 debut.  A live version from '77.

The Stones live at the Marquee in '71 on Dead Flowers.

Awesome Marvin Gaye tune, Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler), from his '67 United LP.

I've got a version with a much fuller sound somewhere but it ain't on youtube. Still this version is up to Jimi's high standard. Love his lyrics -the Vietnam War, the inner city riots in US cities, and of course, the commercialization of his own work.

Oh, uh, I see fingers and hands and shades of faces
Reachin' up and not quite touchin' the promised land
I hear pleas and prayers and a desperate whisper sayin'
"Oh, Lord, please give us a helping hand"
Yeah, yeah

Way down in the background
I can see frustrated souls of cities burning
And all across the water, oh
I see weapons barking out the sting of death
And up in the clouds I can imagine UFOs chucklin' to themselves, hahaha
Laughing they sayin'
"Those people so uptight, they sure know how to make a mess"
Hey, yeah, yeah

Back in the saloon my tears mix with mildew with my drink
I can't really tell my feet from the sawdust on the floor
But as far as I know
They may even try to wrap me up in cellophane and sell me
Brothers, help me, and don't worry about lookin' at the score
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Now, if you really want to stand up and move your body, balo, this will cause your body to become uncontrollably spasmodic.

Great cover by Linda Ronstadt from her '78 LP, Living In The U.S.A.

Those across the pond might better remember the Hollies version from '64.

The Hollies spot on Sunday Night At The London Palladium on 03/10/1965.

The Dave Clark Five with Chaquita from their '64 Glad All Over LP.  Great, grungy sax that sounds like a freight train.

The Ramsey Lewis Trio with Wade In The Water from '66.
