Angry Pattaya councilors order neglected Jomtien palm trees revived

PATTAYA:--Pattaya city councilmen ordered the city’s parks department to immediately rejuvenate about 30 palm trees on Jomtien Beach that have wilted to near-death due to improper care.

Council Chairman Anan Angkanawisai and three other officials toured the 500-meter stretch Feb. 1, between the View Talay 7 condominium and Avalon Beach Resort where the shriveled trees were sagging, their leaves yellow and many dead brown ones on the ground.

Pattaya last year spent 257 million baht on a facelift of the beachfront and, based on appearances, never bothered to water the trees since it was completed.

Kanlaya Barewall, 51, said she works in Dongtan Beach and has passed the dying trees every day. She and others always assumed Pattaya’s Environment Department was on the job and was caring for the trees, but apparently not.

Someone will get the contract for watering them.

No point in sprinkling water on the tarmac/concrete. According to the pic, there's no way the water would reach the roots of these trees.

The paving slabs do not go right up to the tree trunks. There is a fairly large area around each tree to allow for watering. Of course for that to work some water would still need to be applied.

So now we are stuck with dead trees , only 1 year after the "facelift" . Good job.

Strange how the trees they cut down (so they could plant the palm trees) didn't need watering.

It's hard to believe that someone doesn't own one already.

Is there a word for 'maintenance' in the Thai language?  Cars/motorbikes/trees/engineering parts/electrical works/water treatment/sewage disposal/garbage removal  -  please feel free to add.

what about pavements and holes in the roads ??

"Maintenance or preventative maintenance" is rarely done anywhere in Thailand. Palm trees in central Pattaya are also starting to brown. Boardwalks along the beach in central Pattaya have loose boards, screw heads sticking up. Several boards were replaced last year, but they were the wrong size 2"x3" instead of 2"x4" like all the original boards.

Drill a hole in the soil down to about 30'' and put a length of 4" pipe in the hole, everyday fill it from a truck and the water goes to the roots.

Fairly sure that there are many established maintenance programs being paid for just not upheld.... and really, who can blame them when it appears so easy, with so little if any consequence when it all comes out in the open..

They will try to cut costs and use the nearby sea water in order to save a few bht...

Then they will say that brown is the new green...

Or they will call it 50 shades of green...

There was other news this week that Thai people want better living standards.

How will they accomplish this if they can't be bothered to care for thier investment by simply watering the trees??!!

Be happy
