Rubbish places all over Thailand if you ask me, Sukhothai has many cheap clean g/h places all depends on price and area it's a big province.

Ruen Narisara resort on the main road to Old Sukhothai Park had a good-sized room, clean, kingsize bed, working aircon and fridge/TV for 590 baht. Recommended.

How do you explain...

The problem with explaining is that you expect that people try to follow the logic of your explanation, understand that your logic makes sense, and then act accordingly.

If you would try to explain to someone how they can make 10,000B within an hour, and your explanation does not take more than one minute and is easy to understand, then all this might work.

But look at your examples. Why do you think these people should even care about what you try to explain? The best example is maybe the receptionist in #2. Even if she would follow your explanation and even if she would understand it, could she change the prices? Likely not. So why should she even listen?

"These people" is a bit of a giveaway.

Only one way to be sure - give him a try

cheap charlies come to Thailand and expect 5 star hotel and service for a 3 star price .... lol !!

I'm quite happy with a 3-star hotel. All I ask is it's clean, has aircon that works. 5 star hotels are frequently overrated. I once stayed in a Sheraton in New York near Central Park that was an absolute shithole.

No interest in being sure about him. Any more fatuity on the way?

It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.

Looks to me like this thread is attracting more blowflies than bees.

I don't know why you choose poor hotels, but you seem to do it consistently.  I think the last hotel I stayed in that I was disappointed with was in an industrial village in Spain - it smelt of paraffin, but I think it was better than the alternative, which was in the middle of a motorway junction.  Maybe I'm just better at choosing hotels than you.  If you need any advice, feel free to ask

How do you reach the conclusion I choose poor hotels consistently? Did I say I stayed in them? In point of fact, I stayed in two nice resorts in Sukhothai and Phrae which both met my criteria very well.

Apropos the Sheraton, that was when I was travelling on the company dime. After one night there, I asked to see the manager. I asked him to come up to my room, and I pointed out a number of problems, with a written list. I told him I was checking out, and I gave him a choice. Either refund the night's accommodation, or when I got home I would do my level best to ensure my company blacklisted every Sheraton worldwide. Not an idle threat, as it was one of the biggest companies in Australia. He refunded on my company credit card.

1/ How do I explain to my Thai GF that when she is fined once for riding my scooter without a helmet, it's unfortunate. The second time, she has not learned her lesson.

2/ How do I explain to the receptionist of a hotel or resort it is low season, and trying to sting me 2000 baht/night for a room is just stupid?

3. How do I explain to someone showing me a room that air conditioners need maintenance, and an aircon without refrigerant is as useless as tits on a bull?

4/ How do I explain to someone showing me a room gecko shit on the bedspread and mosquitoes in the room is not my idea of the perfect night's sleep?

4/ How do I explain to my Thai GF that an election and an erection in the English language have entirely different meanings, and are pronounced differently?

1. Teach her the phrase: "Sucks to be you baby"

2, 3, 4...leave

4 redux....Hump an election poster? This is what the govt does honey....

You have rescued me from the nattering nabobs of negativity. I was hoping to start a reasonably light-hearted thread. Until you came along, all I got was a cabal of curmudgeons.

sure, charlie visits Thailand and finds 500 baht accommodations less than luxurious... I think this thread has been done...

if you could do a trace, you might find a connection between the threads... "I ain't payin' no sin sid" and "why does my Thai wife's family hate me." Funny to me how rarely people connect that...

Ownership has too many responsibilities, rentals are far better...

For most, likely more practical... more happiness in a vacation rental. If only people were more aware that they have choices.

But to each his own, that's what makes horse races, or at least horse race betting...

I'm trying to find a connection between my OP and your post. I don't think I should waste too much time on that.

Too late - you have done.  Some thoughts are best kept to yourself.

My $10 hotel in Siam Reap was absolutely fabulous, great room, great swimming pool, and 24hr pool bar serving 50c/pint beer.

Your last paragraph...

I learned a long time ago that many things a typical farang would focus on / see as important are just not the sort of things a typical Thai would focus on,

and therefore no point / waste of breath to get serious about.

And vica-versa.

That's life...

As Captain Nathan Brittles states so trenchantly in 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon'-"Never complain and never explain lieutenant-it's a sign of weakness."
