WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said he had asked China to immediately remove all tariffs on U.S. agricultural products because trade talks were progressing well.

He also delayed plans to impose 25-percent tariffs on Chinese goods on Friday, as previously scheduled.

"I have asked China to immediately remove all Tariffs on our agricultural products (including beef, pork, etc.) based on the fact that we are moving along nicely with Trade discussions," Trump said on Twitter, pointing out that he had not raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 25 percent from 10 percent on March 1 as planned.

"This is very important for our great farmers - and me!" Trump said.

Farmers are a key constituency for Trump's Republican Party, and the U.S. president's trade war with China has had a heavy impact on them. Beijing imposed tariffs last year on imports of soybeans, grain sorghum, pork and other items, slashing shipments of American farm products to China.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said this week that U.S. trade negotiators had asked China to reduce tariffs on U.S. ethanol, but it was not immediately clear whether Beijing was willing to oblige.

Trump's post on Twitter came several hours after the U.S. Trade Representative's office said that it would delay the scheduled hike in tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.

The notice, due to be published in the Federal Register next Tuesday, says it is "no longer appropriate" to raise the rates because of progress in negotiations since December 2018. The tariff would remain "at 10 percent until further notice."

A tariff increase to 25 percent from 10 percent was initially scheduled for Jan. 1, but after productive conversations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Trump administration issued a 90-day extension of that deadline.

Trump had said on Sunday he would again delay the increase because of progress in the talks.

Trump is trying to pull the same wool over Xi's eyes that Kim pulled over his.  I don't think China will fall for it.

Yes, but he did in a "disguise", pretending to be one of those Asians who wear glasses...

{Have the farm subsidies been disbursed yet? Asking for a friend.}

Are you aware that Trump boasted that trade wars are easy to win , doesn't all this ' winning ' start to concern you ?

You need to relax and try to control the Trump Derangement Syndrome... not every answer including those about current tariffs need to involve Trump in the answer lol.????

Selfish narcissist. Of course, it's important for him. His stock holdings track the S&P and he is desperate to inflate the stock bubble even more. This miserable human being doesn't care about the country, the economy, or China's hollowing out of America. Just what is good for himself.

You realize that many people have retirement accounts with index funds that track the S&P? The market is off to its best start of the year in the past 30 years and you act like it is a bad thing. I guess it is bad if you are not invested but for those millions upon millions of people how compound their money for retirement or whatever else it has been great. Assuming they didn't get scared and sell back late last year.

The level of uninformed comments in any threads about economic matters here can be astounding. Reading this forum is like encountering people that have been stuck in an isolated bubble.

We are probably in for some of the largest gains in the history of the market very soon because of Trumps policies. I will be attacked for saying this however you can bookmark this and we can come back in 6 months and see how it went.

Most of the people in these threads don't understand how it actually works and attack Trump when whether you agree with Trump or not you should become invested right now.

If you want to be successful you don't wait for government help and you seize the day. China doesn't like or hate Trump it's just numbers. If you live in Thailand the new green deal isn't going to change your life much. If you believe the world is going to end in 12 years... well then nothing else matters. Go out with a bang and spend it all.

Trump could completely rescind all tariffs and not just the current 25% ones that were proposed. What you would get is the single largest increase in stock market history. The left would laugh and say he had failed. Meanwhile all the smart money would be getting richer. I don't understand why certain people can't see this and sit there and complain about being poor when such great opportunity is just in front of us.

Each month buy a share of MSFT NVDA AAPL AMT or whatever through a brokerage like Robinhood with free trades. Just one share each month. Stop blaming Trump because you squandered your nest egg in Thailand. There is still time to turn it around. If you think the dems can print 50 trillion dollars and this will somehow be meaningful to you as an expat in Thailand you are sadly mistaken.

If you aren't actively investing in yourself don't expect Kamala or Warren to help you. It is very easy to actively invest despite age and being in a foreign country.

Sitting in a box in Pattaya lamenting Trump and wishing him ill is not doing anything to help yourself. This is why we do not see more positive opinions from expats living abroad who support the dems. It won't have any impact on their life in Thailand. So it is all attack Trump because the other side offers exactly nothing to them.

Because ultimately nobody on other side is going to make a meaningful change in their life. Trump said today that the dollar shouldn't be too strong. If that pisses you off it is your problem you live abroad.

Neither side of the aisle has any concern about the expat in Thailand. So it is weird that people fixate so much on it. It would be much better to read the conditions in an unbiased manner and then take the steps only you can do to improve your situation.

TLDR

Trump could eliminate tariffs and trigger a huge economic boom but is likely to wait closer to re-election. A sitting president with a growing economy always crushes the opposition.

The only thing close to a truth is the last statement about Americans. And, one of the reasons for that is their spending habits. Can't blame Trump for that. In fact, we're enjoying the lowest unemployment rate in decades.

The topic is tariffs. These people always deflect and go off topic. I mean the guy you are responding to not you. They don't really know about the topic so just start randomly ranting about whatever their fears are. Such as social security, medicare etc.

Realtor vs. Diplomat/Trade Expert

Love how explains a "Memorandum of Understanding", as if repeating the words seven times is an explanation, along with the hand movements.

Love how the Chinese Trade Official laughs at trump.

Finally, Lightizer relents, we'll call it whatever you want boss.
