So, here's a question:

Imagine two Thai drivers in Bangkok. One is on a clapped-out old scooter. The other one is in a brand new AMG Mercedes which costed millions.

If they both committed the same traffic offence, who would be let off by the police, and who would get the fine?

Would police think that the Mercedes driver is rich, and try and extort them for more? Or would they think they are rich and elite so let them go, for fear or some kind of corrupt retribution?

Would the police assume the Mercedes driver was well-connected and turn a blind eye? I suspect that they would see the scooter rider as less likely to be hi-so or have any kind of connections, so try and get a few hundred baht whilst waving the Merc driver on.

My guess, police try both for same fine money.

Motorcai give a sob story and sympathy to be let off or smaller fine.

Merc driver cant give such a good sob story.

will bargain down or just pay up.

Different game when if a serious offence though.

motorcai:

probably not likely to drag someone 100metres under his bike and kill them.

or run a passenger van off the road and kill many people.

but he is most likely broke, so cant get blood from a stone.

get put through court system, maybe go to jail.

Merc:

They know he got money, so if prove in the wrong, the bargaining begin.

If is serious like people killed, then of course the merc expect to pay some bigger fine at the early stage to get a soft landing.

Its just the way it us here.

Im sure if it was you involved, youd say it was an accident, depending of course if not drunk or some extreme condition.

Sure you would much rather just pay a fine on spot?

no going through courts, then fined bigger and then deported/blacklisted.

Anyway ive hear real stories lately (not just reading BS on thaiVisa)

that is getting harder to play the system that way, in many places especially where i often stay in Pattaya.

And for sure that has to do with the army been tougher and changing laws and fines

@RobMuir your comment about English teachers tells a tale about you mate. Right now I am one of them and loving every moment of it. Not so much my time at various offices at Morgan Stanley for almost decade before.

So you think you know what an ETF is... Impressive.

Couldn't agree more with the comments on how much time one can save by using a bike and parking it in town (or anywhere in Phuket where I stay) but I don't feel as safe on a regular scooter as I do on a proper motorbike.

For the pollution/air filtration part, I use an N95 mask under the helmet.

I don't care about hairstyle - have a nice head of hair and women keep smiling at me regardless of my grooming. Not that I'd give a rat's about it... Don't need to over-compensate about anything.

Having said that I'll -of course- take the car if I go anywhere with my wife locally or to the countryside.

Sorry you took offense about my comment that when I see a farang with the short sleeved shirt, tie and long pants, doggy shoes and socks look, sitting on a motorbike with sweat patches, I assume that he is probably an poorly paid English teacher.

One of my best friends here is an English teacher so I know how little they are paid, especially when you you take in all the unpaid homework and prep they do.

i would be interested to hear what tale is told by these thoughts that I have as you state.

Feel free to say it as you see it. I did.

Any tips on ETFs?

Status is also indicated by vehicle colour. Black denotes professional. Which to me is crazy, I would never want to own a car that does double duty as a heat sink.

All cars  should  be  black , to absorb the heat , and save the human race .

accident on scooter, maybe life-changing.  if old, maybe death.  at least more than 5% chance it changes your life.  that's crazy.

if accident in car, probably OK.  much less odds of it being life-changing.

983473298473248937 scooter accidents a day, we all know this.

it's not a poor or rich thing, rich people ride bicycles and have cars and scooters and all those things.    i just think scooters are super dangerous.

if a scooter is 30,000.  i would think how many taxis one can take, or other transportation.

be safe out there you scooter drivers, since outside of bangkok maybe 0.00000000000000000000000000000003 percent wear a helmet

You complain about the smog, but willing to burn fossil fuels to stand in gridlocked traffic, with the air conditioner on.

Petroleum is not derived from from ancient dead organisms.

So not a fossil fuel.

Sorry.

Common misconception based on no real evidence.

Lizard + fern ≠ oil.

[The powers that be lie to use as matter of routine.]

This is off topic and pointless of further debate... But, you need to educate yourself instead of making insane and daft statements.

Look up Kerogen typing, Van Krevelen diagrams.

Did check that out.

The literature papa reviewed ASSUMES petroleum is biotic.

Does not provide evidence to support it.

[If you could reference a study that actually does, would be appreciated.]

Jupiter's moon Titan,

approximately the same size as Earth,

Is loaded with hydrocarbons...

orders of magnitude more than our planet.

No life there, so how was that formed Richard...?
