Truck driver dodges charge for dangerous load as 33 tons of rice flip semi-trailer onto its side

PHUKET: The driver of a fully-loaded semi-trailer has escaped any charges for a dangerous incident that truck and trailer, full loaded with rice, flip onto its side beside the bypass road yesterday afternoon (May 23).

 

Phuket City Traffic Police were alerted to the incident at 4:07pm, said Capt Bancha Kuenun, Phuket City Traffic Police.

 

The truck had overturned at the entrance to the Namsang rice trade warehouse on the bypass road, he added.

He used to deliver rice riding side saddle on his buffalo.

That’s another way to reduce the load at the courts. The West could learn a few things from Thai policing....

Any normal country would sling the book at him !  He would possibly never get another driving job. But in Thailand they just ignore it cos it is normal now. Going downhill faster, the country not the trucks !  But thats another headline that frequently comes up

If anyone actually checked the link they would see how ludicrous most posts on this thread are.

The accident didn't occur on the road, but on a private driveway, so traffic charges wouldn't really be appropriate.

The cause of the accident wasn't speed, brake failure or drugs, but the idiotically designed steep driveway that forces vehicles to do a U-turn off the hwy to enter the business.  

The driver possibly erred by not getting the hwy closed so he could turn left from the center lane instead attempting the tight maneuver from a difficult position.

A public road surface width may not necessarily prescribe the entire public right-of-way boundary. Typically, a public road right-of-way exceeds the width of the roadway.

It is also typical that state-owned power lines will be placed within the public right-of-way. In the picture the overturned truck lies between the roadway edge and the power lines. Therefore, the truck might have overturned and come to rest within the public right-of-way and not on private property.

More information is needed.

But the police have apparently decided on the spot that the truck is on private property.

They should have performed some minimal investigation for any relevant facts before excusing the truck driver from any charges.

best would have been to make a u-turn somewhere flat if the u-turn is the issue. 
However, to me it seems a u-turn would have left the truck on the far side. 
My guess is that he misjudged the slant when driving in and could not accelerate fast enough to pull the trailer up
 

Only a Thai company would build a slip road into it's property in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic? Looks like he has to do a 180 degree turn to get in?

Yes, not far enough to right on slip road. Trailer pulled truck over.

Yes. It's crazy. He would have to be over in the faster land to make the left turn.

You should have performed some minimal reading of the link before condemning the driver and the police.

The off-ramp itself is sloped. The photos do not clearly indicate if he could have accessed the off-ramp heading in the opposite direction.  Perhaps the rice was loaded incorrectly and more to one side causing the vehicle on the sloped ramp to fall.

In most western countries drivers have to keep a logbook and adhere to the number of hours they are allowed to drive before they can rest.  I guess in Thailand it is the truck that must do that.
