New Bt70-billion toll motorway from west of Bangkok to upper South planned for 2024

The Department of Highways has set a deadline of 2024 to open a new Bt70-billion toll motorway linking the Bangkok border province of Nakhon Pathom with Cha-am district in Phetchaburi province. The department has dismissed local calls for the new road to connect with an existing highway.

Satitpong Apimethee, the Department of Highways director in Prachuap Khiri Khan, said the new route would create a shortcut to the South for tourists and goods.

Somboon Thienthammacha, deputy director for the road’s location and design, said Thailand had fallen behind compared with neighbouring countries where highway projects had been underway for years. Attempts to construct a main southern highway have been frustrated for the past two decades.

Locals living along the new route had proposed that it connect up with the existing national highway No 3510. The department dismissed the proposal, explaining that Highway 3510 had too many bends to serve the logistical aims of the new road.

Good to see it is elevated and will be completed by 2024,  as by 2094 it may well have become possibly Thailand's longest series of connected bridges with the projected rise in sea-levels.

Always huge concrete structures. Thailand is in love with concrete and these projects excite big business. Why? Could it be that recent reports in the international press that concrete (cement) is the most corrupt business worldwide are correct? No need to answer is there, the corruption is what keeps everything going regardless of government.

Thailand concrete is prone to cancer. Insufficient cement and an abundance of sea sand??

Pieces are falling of the elevated BTS rail system already.

Am I missing something here?  I thought posts had to be in English?

This new highway will just become another slaughter house.

Adding a touch of attempted humour sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

build it  and make  the  speed 120kph,  ban  lorries  they  can  use  the  old  road.

Seems their plan is to install cameras and lower the speed limits.  Highway 35 for instance from Samut Sakhon to Samut Songkram the speed limit is now 80, with parts of it as low as 60.  In one spot there is a 90 sign and then about 20 meters past it a 60 sign.

Oh, great. This will feed right into Borom, which has already had four or five new highways and roadways feed into it over the past six or seven years creating one big parking lot.

Another project initiative put forward by Khun Prayut's government.

More projects have been either started, put out to tender or completed by this government in 4 years than what others have tried to do in the past 20 years.

Bangkok needs more and more and gets more and more. How many trains has Prayut put in the city or connected to it?

Nakhon Pathom is approx 60 kilometers west of Bangkok... not sure what you mean?

There is a train link from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom as well as many mini-bus services from various locations in the capital

Driving yourself from Bangkok there is a very good road connection which takes about an hour.

What about the one which was supposed to bring happiness to the people rather than relatives and friends in the concrete and steel business?

Those who own the cement company are neither friends nor relatives of anyone in the government, as far as I know.

You're probably right, and I've just got a nasty, suspicious mind. Been here too long, obviously.
