PM calls for mutual respect, as he pledges to lead country forward

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha pledged to lead the country on the path of progress, as the parliamentary debate on the government’s policy statement closed early on Saturday. Parliament president Chuan Leekpai closed the meeting at 3.30am, ending 34 hours of debates that began on Thursday.

Prayut said that the two days of deliberations had served as an opportunity for everyone to meet and get acquainted with each other. “Sometimes, we do not like each other because we may not know the other’s thinking but the most important thing is we should respect each other. Sometimes, I may have spoken in ways that were not appropriate, for that I apologise. I will adjust myself for the next meeting.”

Prayut said he believes that everyone loves the country and wants the country to move forward.

He promised to firmly lead the country forward despite the scepticism of many MPs about the policies. “In fact we wrote the policies to manage the country so as to harmonise with the country’s national strategy with a five-year plan.”

Prayut said most members were concerned about the investment plan, which relies on borrowings, especially as the country already has high public debt. He pointed out that in fact the government would be borrowing only one-third of the total investment budget, while the rest would be thrown open to the private sector to invest and develop the country’s infrastructure.

Prayut thanked the Parliament president and members for suggestions on how to manage the country and on how to solve the country’s problems.

He said the government will use all suggestions that help drive the country forward. A meeting will be held with all government agencies in October to find ways to implement the plan, he said.

“We will administer with the rule of law and lead Thailand forward firmly, without leaving anyone behind,” he said.

Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit said the government’s policies were lacking in vision. He also felt that PM Prayut lacked maturity to control his emotions when a member of Parliament debates about his qualification.

More plans and strategies. The real five year plan is to fill their pockets as fast as they can and they will work efficiently and with gusto to bring the plan to fruition. What happened to the twenty year plan?Maybe there won't be any money left after the five year plan so we will go back into hiding and wait until there is more money before returning.Sounds like a wonderful "strategy"!

So he is admitting the country has gone backwards the past 5 years?

What a joke. The man who disrespects the law, disrespects the constitution, disrespects the will of the Thai people, asking for respect after committing a coup and then mismanaging the government and running Thailand into the ground, all relevant metrics going backwards? You've got to be kidding me! He should show respect by sending himself to prison for the rest of his life.

If he had any respect, he would step down from this farce, and let proper politicians take the country forward.

I will adjust myself for the next meeting.” Hmmmm to the left or the right ?

In a civilized community you only earn respect but with many in Thailand they think you can buy it

Or steal it!

Does that mean no more punch ups in Parliament,  just a quiet kick in the balls in the car park after dark

I think there's a screw underneath the seat for that.

What Prayuth needs to understand is that respect need to be earned, and never, ever should be freely given. In the army respect is shown for rank. It has nothing to do with achievement, merit, or success. In the real world it does not work like that. What have you done with the past five years? You were amply given the opportunity to improve the nation, and gain the respect you now desperately crave. You blew it, and you did nothing for your people. Less than zero.

The best thing for the nation, would be your resignation. Immediately.

So the man who has no respect for anybody calls for mutual respect.

Respect is earned, how can he expect anybody to respect a crowd who dont respect others, just ride rough shod over them.

The GALL of this man is amazing to behold but the problem is that he really believe his own BS that he is the saviour of Thailand.

The rich and powerful few families tell him this constantly and his minions who crave a few crumbs from the table lick his boots as he struts around Thailand like some Roman all-powerful General.

Oh, and I'm sure new laws will be made! I think he meant march and not lead.

March people to 'readjustment' most probably.

He lacks maturity with anything he does. He is like a big schoolboy bully with a bad temper.

Does dear leader know that the term 'mutual respect' implies that he, himself, must show respect to people who don't share his view. After his coup and the fist five years of his rule, he didn't;t show much mutual respect to anyone.

Let us hope that a significant number of parliament members ask him to step down. It may be the only route this nation has, toward a resemblance of normality, and competent leadership. He really needs to go. Talk about gross incompetency. Talk about hubris, arrogance, and a lack of self awareness. This guy lowers the whole concept of leadership to a new basement level.

Wow! So many replies are anti prayuth here.

Be that as it may, i am confused. I thought he said that by the end of this month the new PM will take over. So why is he talking about a future with himself as leader?

Lots of words to get there but....yep...that's what he is saying. And the future can turn sour very quickly since leadership skills in the civilian sector are severely lacking.

Lead by example - no need for long speeches.
