Thai road carnage continues: 5 dead in two accidents in Sa Kaew province

Thai media continued to report on the appalling carnage on the country's roads. 

 

As the country's transport minister started campaigns to lessen the death toll from accidents involving public transport the reality of the statistics, that sees Thailand mentioned as one of the most dangerous places on earth to drive, hit home. 

 

In rainy conditions in Sa Kaew province two people were injured when a Mitsubishi Attrage left the road on Route 348 near the Thap Ratchawithaya school in Ta Phraya district of the north eastern province.

Both people later died and one was found to be pregnant bringing the death toll to three.

 

On Route 359 in Muang district a hit and run driver killed two boys riding a motorcycle. 

 

The driver was later apprehended. 

 

Transport minister Saksayam Chidchob - whose family own a Moto GP racetrack in the north east - has pledged to do something about the carnage on the roads by concentrating on public transport. 

 

However, he may well have to widen the scope of his campaign to include the general public's driving abilities, notes Thaivisa. 

 

Poor driving habits and motorcycles with children feature in many of the nation's road casualties.

Was it not him who wanted the speed limit increased? taking of U turns, if they closed all u turns on main roads, the accident rate would probably be reduced by half overnight

Maybe The Nation could start a campaign along with other media to get the government (I use that term very loosely) to wake up to this problem with driving standards over here, a bit like the UK media does on a number of issues ??

Hopefully they will let the kids parents into the cell and turn the cctv off for a while - though, it seems a cash payment would probably be seen as acceptable

There is a set of traffic light near where I live and I have to do a left to get home, it's a nightmare everyday seriously have to have eyes in your ass. If the police where to stand there from 6pm I guess they'ed make a fortune.

No Lights

No Helmets

Sidecars overloaded also no light

No doubt no license

No pora bor  

To much like hard work

There is a lot the Thai government could do to lessen the road casualties, but they are too busy bullying the retirees and tourists with there TM30S etc, etc, etc.

I have noticed a number of issues regarding U turns. They are safe if used correctly.

Firstly Thai drivers need to drive in the left carriageway unless overtaking. This causes problems when coming to a U turn and a need to use it and cannot easily get into the right lane because of unnecessary traffic in that lane. Then following traffic comes up behind far to fast to allow reaction time to the vehicle turning into the U turn. And they do not see 18 wheelers when they block part of the right lane. Why not??? 

Secondly it does not help when in the U turn if an impatient driver comes in as well and blocks the sighting. He goes and everyone else thinks it is good enough for them as well. Not always the case!!

Thirdly the Thai depth perception is really c**p, as we all know from the lack of proper testing, and therefore pull out when they are ready, not if there is enough time!! 

Again with education, 555, then it would be a safe manoeuvre to carry out but hey ho, TIT.

Country enforcement requires two or more, called a check point, and a check point once a month isn't going to do the job especially if they are too scared to stop cars then you got the corruption aspect fixing the problem would only cut the extra income they so richly expect each month.

The problem is the DLT, they have a voice but zero power to require any changes. Then when it comes to changes they all come from the same swamp (popular word today) of driving therefore can't see the problem thus unable to provide the simple solution. They even claim there is nothing wrong with the designs of their roads.

This agency has enough staff to ghost inspect all the major transportation services to educated and rid the bad drivers, vehicles provide heavy fines even suspend operation license but doing nothing doing something would end their jobs.

 

Then you got the police who are entrusted to enforce the rules or laws yet they too are from the same swamp of driving can't see the problem and apply their own rules of culture and religion which continues and enforces in drivers what they are doing is correct! A good example is many locals think it is standard practice regardless of fault a foreigner must pay this comes from the enforcement practice of the police that culture and religion is more important that applying the law! Share ignorance! Then you got the police believing with the advance technology of vehicles that you can driver as fast as one likes and you will be safe. So like a few years ago, Porsche drives down a Soi 120 km/H a young 16 girls steps out and gets cut in half family get 300K that is their application and enforcement.

 

You think with all this lost of face stuff they would be sticking their head in the sand, coming up with all this nonsense stuff to try to fix a very simple problem.

How about actually opening driving schools where people are taught how to drive, day time/night time,  driving in different conditions & parking included !

with a minimum of hours accumulated before a test drive can be taken by an independent test driver.. not the instructor.

Also a written test on the highway code.

Would need to involve outside foreign trainers initially to set the bar, therein being the first stumbling block as they appear to refuse almost all outside influence, again with the loss of face.......
