Senior MPs opposing a no-deal Brexit sought assurances from the EU their bid for a three-month delay would be granted, it has emerged.

European leaders were sounded out before MPs, including the “rebel alliance”, passed a bill, expected to receive royal assent on Monday, forcing Boris Johnson to ask for an extension. However, those involved said there were no guarantees in a process that was changing by the day.

It comes as the rebels, including former Tories who were subsequently thrown out of the party, prepare for a legal battle in case the prime minister attempts to defy a law forcing him to ask for an extension on 19 October. The UK is due to leave the EU on 31 October, but the new law would envisage a Brexit extension until the end of January 2020.

 

Opposition parties have agreed to block a general election before a Brexit extension has been agreed.

The sounding of EU leaders over an extension has angered Tory Brexiters. The Conservative MP and former cabinet minister David Jones said: “Senior EU figures gave private assurances to British MPs, as a consequence of which they supported the surrender bill. This confirms the level of EU interference in our internal affairs and makes the need for Brexit all the more pressing.”

Where have I said that the referendum was anything else but advisory. But just to add, parliament agreed to act on behalf of the advice they received from the British electorate.

Parliament can't make the decision, so let we the people decide in a final, this time legally binding, referendum.

Rees-Mogg and his mates stopped Parliament from doing what the people asked for.

 

Make this referendum legally binding, then Parliament has to do what the people ask for.

It seems downright normal to investigate whether a proposal is feasible with the other parties involved.  Only a buffoon would embark on any political endeavour without canvassing support and opinion.

 

Unless Boris ”Remain” Johnson’s aim was always to undermine Brexit.  Good job, Boris!

They, understandably, sought confirmation from the EU that if successful they could, if necessary, extend Article 50. Confirmation which is not assured, as anyone who bothered to read the quote can see.

 

The real Quislings are those who prevented Brexit from happening last March; people such as Rees-Mogg.

No government would ever be able to do so, because you cannot at the same time satisfy the electorate that voted for leaving without a deal and those who voted for leaving with a deal. And there you have your point for asking; not asking “again” but asking more precisely.

I believe that Parliament cannot change the conditions of a vote, be it election or referendum, after that vote has taken place.

As for your charts, some say one thing, others say the opposite.

whatever happens - revoke article 50, referendum, election, deal or no-deal Brexit, the UK will end up back in the EU in the end.......unfortunately what happens to Brexit determines the amount of damage to the country first.

Apart from the dishonourable and undemocratic clowns who occupy the HoC and HoL right now, the real quislings are those who were left in control of the negotiations for more than two years, only to come up with such a poor and unacceptable withdrawal agreement (treaty); people such as May and Robbins.

The UK government would have delivered Brexit last March had Rees-Mogg and others not put personal interests ahead of the country's and blocked it. 

 

How many more times does that have to be pointed out to you?

 

So let's remove MPs who do that from the process and give the decision back to a final, legally binding referendum. With proper options as detailed many times previously.
