Farang is NOT impolite word.

Featured Replies

I would rather be called by my name than farang, but we have no choice most of the time other than to accept it, like many things here it will not chnge anytime soon. I am not offended by being caled farang, however being called French, now that's a different matter altogether! ????????

  • Yinn would you object to being called Asian all the time?

  • On a technical level it is a kind of collective noun for white westerners. But then so is women and I would object to being addressed as "you, woman". It is simply not polite.

  • How about "Kaek" ? Do Indians regard that as polite?

WHEN DOES THE VOTING START ??    Yinn has my vote for POTY  !!

Jeez,  Three times this week she starts a thread and our faithful TV members are climbing over chairs to get in on the action .   Attention anyone needing a  Sales and Promotion  specialist.  This girl is a natural !

And doesn't need a work permit.       Go girl !    oh, and Yinn,   "girl" is NOT an impolite word   ????

Then how come Thailand is in the top 25 most racial countries

That is one strange survey.  I can't believe my home country of the USA is not on that list.  We're pretty darn racist.  In fact, I don't see any western countries on that list (except maybe Russia).  Regardless, what does that article have to do with the word farang?

A waitress asked my wife "Does the farang want ice in his beer?"

Now that is two insults in just one question.

The waitress spoke to your wife in English?  555555

Although personally, it doesn't bother me so much. When you walk into either a school or some office and you hear 'falang' like a few times or maybe 10. It is an indication on how polite or professional they are. Places or people that regard foreigners better including schools will use 'tang chat' I believe.

if somebody calls me farang , I tend to call them Kon Laos just to wind them up a bit!

It's normally the tone that pisses me off or if I'm a customer.

If I'm a customer I should be referred to as one, not farang.

More intelligent Thais tend to use it less in your presence.

Have never objected being referred to as farang. Although I can remember a couple of times Thai people brought up this matter themselves in a conversation. I replied along the lines of "no problem, no big deal, just natural and reflects the plain reality at its face value".

I replied to a poster who said Thais are not racists

When I am called a farang, I remind them that I have a name. It shuts them up immediately. Sorry, it is racist.

So you believe that survey?  You think India is the most racist country in the world?  Come on.

Good morning Yinn. How are you today? In a few weeks I will be riding my motorcycle right past your house. Can I stop in and say hello? I will keep my helmet and riding gear on.

remember to bring a raincoat......

I get called loob lor all the time. Sometimes lor jang.

I am not offended.  If the cap fits ....etc.

In addition to my previous post, I'd like to say if your okay with a Thai or group of Thai's calling you this or joking with you about it, it will help to make 'friends' with them.

I liked how one poster said he would call them 'kon laos.' Ha. Try calling a Thai 'pama' or 'camin.' ????

And remember 1 Thai not happy with you is one thing but a group..well might want to go to a new place.

If you really want to wind them up, look at the Thai next to the person who calls you Farang and say (in Thai)...

”why does it (mun) call me Farang?  Doesn’t it know the word for foreigner?”

I occasionally will say in Thai that it's impolite or that they haven't been educated.

It just depends on the context.

I dont really care. Japanese, Chinese, Cambos all have their words for foreigners. I was married to a Japanese girl, I was a gaijin. No biggy. Call me what you want, just dont call me late for dinner.

I like the honorifics Thai folks use towards me: Papa Falang (Respectable Old Foreigner), Falang Baa (Mature Foreiner), Falang Kwaii (LIvely and Active Foreigner), Falang Hia (Clean Foreigner).

...and Jaek for Chinese, I believe. Bule in indonesia, I dunno...

It's such a nuisance when people object to the names you call them based on how they look, isn't it.

I'm sure well-meaning progressives like Mr Trudeau find it a real minefield working out when you can and can't used the word black, or yellow etc... using the word white seems to never be a problem.

The issue is supposedly about "power", and hence because whitemen are inherently evil (and I feel the evil brewing up in my soulless white male carcass almost hourly), so everyone else can call us anything, and it's OK, but heaven forfend if we do it back, even in the mildest, gentlest way.

Whenever Thais do it to me, I mimic them, "ouei falang!" or say "ouei kon Thai!" or "ouei kon see dam" - because they really don't like being called see-dam, but then I add "falang chorp see dam", and all's well.

Farang is not a word for foreigner only 'white' so how can that not be racist?   they don't call blacks 'farang'

Yes, but did she like it if you called her a nip or a jap? I speak Japanese, and I've once advanced the argument that Jap is just like "farang/bule/gaijin/gwailou" etc..., Japs will go along with it, but whitepeople get offended on their behalf - fortunately, I speak Japanese, so I can switch languages so the dogooding whitefolks don't have to have their virtuesignalling triggered.

I had this debate on <URL Automatically Removed> once... they had a thread of "beautiful farang women" (naked, of course).

So I dutifully uploaded some gorgeous black women photos, because I assumed that they are farang too... what a backlash! you can't even be "sexist" without encountering "racism", even of the positive kind.

Identity BS politics is just bad news and causes nothing but division. I couldn't care less is you are black, white, yellow or purple just stop with the pc BS already.

I'd suggest you're safer referring to yourself as mun so as to mock them more subtly, and playfully, and avoiding an uncomfortable situation.
