FTI speculates more investors will move to Thailand

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has published a brief on the situation and trends in the electrical and electronics industries for the period January-September 2019, which notes that the total export value of electrical appliances products has dropped by 2.15 per cent over the same period last year to Bt576 billion, while that of electronic products (including telecommunication groups) has seen a 11.36 per cent decrease to Bt822.07 billion.

However, despite the decrease in exports for both sectors, the FTI estimates that they could well bounce back at the end of 2019 as the international trade dispute is pushing several companies and investors to move their production facilities to Southeast Asia. According to FTI, the top destinations include Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

FIT also attributed the likely upswing in the electrical and electronics trend to the government’s policy to extend investment promotion measures in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and SMEs promotion campaigns toward next year, which should attract more investors to Thailand instead of neighboring countries.

You people live in Dream Land , why would investors come to Thailand when the economy is in decline due the strong baht and exports are down over all . I don't think they come here to lose money .

Yeah right! The economical climate in Thailand is really attractive at the moment. Did I also mention that the fairies and dwarfs are still waiting for Santa to deliver the plastic tree?

All hopeful speculation,I think.

Many might speculate that this speculation will not materialise. Some might even speculate that the high Thai Baht might be a big deterrent and there is even speculation whether the EEC will become reality.

Things are desperate when the economy is built on speculation.

With Thai wages 3x-4x those of neighbouring countries, I speculate no business will come.

they show the trend on China and USA but didn't mention the expectations for Thailand, we all know they would be great but at least they should show it so we could have a good laugh 555

Thailand no longer LOS now is LWT (land of wishful thinking)

Chevrolet Laid  off 300 at its  main plant in Rayong a  while  back also I read yesterday.

So is this "FTI" team related to the TAT statistical manipulators?

Load of rubbish. Totally illogical.

What about the Tooth Fairy? ????

From another article:

"The employment rate in the non-farming sector, for the third quarter of this year, has fallen by 2.3% whereas, in the farming sector, it has fallen by 1.8%, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB)

NESDB Secretary-General Tossaporn Sirisamphan attributed the fall to natural problems, economic slowdown and shrinking exports."

Add to that the strength of the baht and the immigration policies (yes, I mean the TM-30) and an unskilled work force, why would any company risk investing.

Do 'investors' get a special visa or extension to stay ?  If no special immigration privilege I don't expect many at all are going to come to Thailand to live or work or invest.

Ah yes , but half a dozen new ones have opened around the corner.

They get a TM30,what could be more encouraging than that!

I just watched a story of global companies in china moving out and heading for Vietnam.it makes no economic sense to set up a company in a country where the currency is out of control and then have to sell/export goods.

take Harley Davidson, built a factory that must of cost some ridiculous amount.then they have to sell them in Asia at the baht rate.oh and to top the lot the Thai government have now slapped 100,000b extra tax on motorcycles over 1,000cc which I see as purely aimed at HD as many other manufacturers don't produce many models over that size engine.

i bet HD are now regretting the move.

A company that our son deals with has just closed 500 laid off.

They have just make the application and renewal process for work permits a little bit more difficult with additional requirements for tax reporting.

Loads closing on the Eastern seaboard.

That is the reality of this economy, but careful telling the truth, the government have already warned people about spreading bad news.

Triumph motorcycles, built in Thailand, are 50 to 100% more expensive in Thailand than in the UK.

Any sensible analysis could have predicted what was coming for Harley in Thailand, however as I have said before, these kinds of decisions are made in Bangkok by starry eyed new arrivals with pants round the ankles in go-go bars and not by seasoned and savvy expats.

They would need to bring in their own workers.  The Thai education system has banned thinking in the schools

Reworded more precisely:

'However, despite reality ....'

Well maybe because they are forced out of China by Trump? I guess the high baht is also caused by China.
